FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with 'visiter' for 'sister' line 17, page 123, and 'latter' for 'letter' 6 lines up, page 160; the three illustrations up to p.45 are First Issue, carrying the Chapman and Hall imprint (Eckel). Bound without half-title. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.[4] xvi; 624. Full purple calf by Kelly, with raised bands, gilt titles to black label on spine, full gilt back, marbled edges and endpapers. Usual toning/spotting to plates, text clean, name 'Elizabeth Jennings' and address to first blank, spine pleasingly sunned, front board a little scratched. A near fine copy. The first of Dickens' romances, it is perhaps most famous for its extraordinary and memorable villains, Wackford Squeers and Ralph Nickleby. Seller Inventory # 50303

Contemporary full blind-stamped leather, with gold lettering and tooling to spines. All paper edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Charles Dickens engraved by William Finden, after an oil painting by David Maclise. Originally published as a serial from 1838 to 1839, "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby" was Dickens' third novel. The story focuses on the life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who must support his mother and sister after his father dies. This first book form edition contains the following first issue points as listed by Smith: the first four plates signed by Chapman; "visiter" for "sister" p. 123 line 17; "flys" for "flies" p. 245 line 10; "visiters" instead of "visitors" p. 272 line 2; "incontestible" for "incontestable" p. 297 line 22; "suprise"for "surprise" p. 586 line 24 (see Eckel pp. 64-5; Smith 5).This work is not only complete with its 39 plates illustrated by Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne), it is also extra-illustrated with 59 plates by Thomas Onwhyn, with some signed under his pseudonym Peter Palette. The artist used this name for his etchings in an unauthorized edition of this work.Some rubbing and closed tears along joints. Frontispiece portrait of Charles Dickens heavily foxed.
