Mild shelf wear externally. Joints sound; hinges weak. Foxing to half title and fly leaves and, throughout, to fore- and bottom edges. Light pencil marks in the margin of page ix of the preface made, one assumes, by the writer of the letter of 26 September 1944 to the editor of the Manchester Guardian which is tipped in at this point, from a relation of the Cheeryble brothers (that is to say, of the Grant brothers on whom the Cheeryble brothers are based) and which, I think, adds to rather than detracts from the interest of this volume. Item Description: Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Phiz (illustrator). 1st Edition. Mixed state first edition, with 41 first issue points! 39 etchings plus frontis. In this copy, the illustration called for at p. 615 is actually at p. 62. On p. 123, line 17 "visiter" has been corrected to "sister". On p. 160, 6 lines up, "latter" has no yet been corrected to "letter". "Chapman & Hall" at the base of illustrations facing pp. 18 and 25, but not at the base of the frontis, nor the illustrations facing pp. 38 and 45. Full brown leather binding, with four raised bands on the spine, black leather backstrip, gilt and blind-stamped detailing on the spine and bordering both boards. Full marbled text block. Green endpapers. Leather is moderately rubbed at the lower edge of the boards, and rubbed through to the cardboard below at three fore-corners. Both gutters are worn, with the front gutter just starting to crack, and the rear gutter cracked 3" at its head and 2" at its tail, but both boards remain attached. There is a 7/8" closed tear to the leather at the tail of the spine, a 2" cosmetic crack to the leather on the spine, a 3/4" x 1/2" chip to the leather at the head of the spine, and a 1/4" chip to the left side of the backstrip (not affecting text). The lower 2" of the front board and lower 1.5" of the rear board are lightened and mildly warped from water exposure (although the book has absolutely no mildewy odor). Otherwise the boards are only slightly rubbed and worn (as would be typical even for a well-cared-for leather volume of this age). Edges of endapers are darkened and there is a 1/4"-diameter chip to the paper of the rear pastedown. Previous owner's bookplate on ffe, and name on half title page. Pencil note on a front and a rear flyleaf. Otherwise the interior is unmarked. Most of the portraits at the beginning of the book are clean and in very good to near fine condition; most later illustrations are lightly to significantly foxed or lightly rippled from dampstaining. The text has occasional mild foxing. Includes mildly rubbed glassine DJ, with no tears. Overall, this copy is in good condition, and remains highly collectible! We are happy to send photos or answer questions upon request. Bookseller Inventory # L1057

Item Description: London: Chapman and Hall., 1839. First Edition, First Issue with 'visiter' for 'sister', p.123, and 'latter' for 'letter', Eckel noting that the former misprint was picked up by Dickens in proof and is an error 'rarely seen'. p.160. Octavo. Bound without half-title in attractive contemporary full diced and polished plum calf, richly worked in gilt and blind, with marbled endpapers and and all edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece after Daniel Maclise and thirty-nine engravings by 'Phiz'' (H.K.Browne) Some browning to plates, although a little less than usual. neat repair to foot of spine, some discolour to same, lightly rubbed. A sound, handsome copy in an aristocratic binding - with the Panshanger bookplate depicting the strawberry-leaf coronet of George Augustus Frederick Cowper, Sixth Earl Cowper (1806-1856). Dickens' comic novel centres around the exploits of Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who must support his mother and sister after his father dies. The tone of the work is burlesque, with Dickens usual snipe at social injustice. Many memorable characters are introduced, including Nicholas' malevolent uncle Ralph, playing the role of an antagonist, who thinks Nicholas will never amount to anything, and the villainous Wackford Squeers, who operates a squalid boarding school at which Nicholas temporarily serves as a tutor.
