An Account of the Life of the: Edwards, Jonathan &

About this Item: Boston: D. Henchman, 1749., 1749. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo, full calf. [2], xii, [18], 316, [2] pp. First edition of this influential biography of the famed Indian missionary David Brainerd, comprising his own private writings as well as annotations by Jonathan Edwards, at whose home he died in 1747. From early childhood Brainerd was introspective, prone to depression, and experienced religious compulsions. Expelled from Yale for revivalist sympathies which ran counter to the university's views, Brainerd instead gained his license to preach and began trying to work among various Indian tribes in New York and Massachusetts before meeting better success in Delaware. Though spiritually he valued solitude, his time among various Indian tribes was lonely and it is thought that many of his religious and emotional experiences were pathological rather than divine.Brainerd was admired during and after his life for his willingness to work in adverse conditions and his self-forgetful work ethic. These traits likely contributed to his poor health, however, and, too ill to work, he spent the last months of his life with the Edwards family in Northampton, Massachusetts where he was tended by the Edwards' daughter Jerusah, to whom he was probably engaged. Certainly he was admired greatly by Edwards himself, for his moving family prayers as well as for his spiritual devotion and ministerial work. This book, which became a 19th Century best-seller, was the first American biography to gain popularity in Europe and was an inspiration and companion to many in the religious or missionary life. Early woman reader's inscription on front and rear endpapers: "Molly Haughton, 1795," Also inscribed by one "Seth Tomson" and dated 1806. REFERENCES: DAB II, pp. 58991; HOWES E56. CONDITION: Good, rubbed, partially worn through at spine edges, lacking flyleaf, one gathering sprung but still firmly attached, title-page wrinkled and soiled at edges. Seller Inventory # 3710
