Item Description: London; William Miller, 1801. Hardcover, plain turquoise paper covered publisher's boards, 8vo, untrimmed pages, 19 engraved plates throughout and an engraved portait frontis (Thomas Stothard (7), Jones (1), Banks (1), John Thurston (1), Samuel Shelley (1) and nine unsigned/unattributed) and a foldout map. A revised and corrected edition of the original Jarvis translation, this four volume set includes a life of Cervantes and a chronological plan of Don Quixote at the start of volume one. Pagination is: Vol 1 - cxlv, 371pp; Vol II - ix, 412pp; Vol III - xvi, 391pp; Vol IV - xii, 440pp, plus 7pp publisher's catalogue. The four volumes are complete, with all the plates and the map present. The pages surfaces are clean and unfoxed, the untrimmed edges have accumulated a certain amount of dirt over time. The rough weave endpapers have two sets of previous owners' names - an earlier copperplate pen name and a more recent copperplate stamp. The first volume is inscribed "From the Editor With his best Regards", but although there is a preface from the editor there is no attribution and we have been unable to discover who this was. The set is bound in plain publisher's boards which we believe would probably have been replaced with a binding of the original buyer's choice. The binding is solid in all volumes but the boards and spines are in varying degrees of health. Volume I - both boards are worn to all outer edges and the corners frayed, the rear board is loosening and the spine is missing. Volume II - all edges worn, corners frayed, bottom third of the spine is missing and the remainder is connected at the rear hinge only. Volume III - all edges worn, corners frayed, bottom 2 inches of spine missing but remainder attached both sides. Volume IV - has been rebacked and repaired, the board edges resealed and the corners rebuilt, with the remains of the original spine paper pasted down to the matched rebacking. Quite nicely done. The first three volumes could be repaired to match the fourth, or all could be leather bound to make a very handsome and worthwhile set. Bookseller Inventory # 15419

Item Description: Engraved frontis. port. of Cervantes by Virtue, several engraved head-pieces, & 67 engraved plates. xxiii, [8], [xxv]-xxxii, vi, [2], 90, [14] (first leaf a blank), 355 pp.; xii, 388 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. speckled calf (joints very expertly repaired), spines gilt, brown & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. London: J. & R. Tonson & R. Dodsley, 1742. First edition of this esteemed translation and a wonderful association copy; this set belonged to Edward Gibbon and bears his bookplate in each volume. Gibbon was known for the wide range of his reading and he refers to this work in several of his letters and writings. He clearly liked this text; he owned an Ibarra edition in Spanish (1782), two editions of Smollett's translation (1755 and 1770), and the present edition. Jarvis (1675-1739), was a portrait painter and translator. A part of the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, his stylized portraits of society ladies were very fashionable. Jarvis advised Sir Robert Walpole in forming his art collection and was appointed king's painter in 1723. "His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original."-ODNB. The superb engravings are mostly signed by John Vanderbank (1694-1739), painter and draughtsman. They were first used in the 1738 quarto edition of Don Quixote issued by the Tonsons in the original Spanish. The 90 pages in Vol. I print the first English translation of Mayans & Siscar's important Life of Cervantes. Fine and handsome set with his fine armorial bookplate in each volume. Minor rubbing and wear to extremities. Bookseller Inventory # 5807
