About this Item: London Gall & Inglis [1883?], 1883. First edition, pp.iv, 222, frontis, illustrations. A very good copy in original decorated cloth. Slightly cocked. Some light rubbing to spine and corners. A.L.O.E. is the pseudonym of Charlotte Maria Tucker, 1821-1893, a prolific English writer and poet for children and adults. Many of Tucker's most fascinating stories are set in India. Some were translated into Indian languages. She set out for India in 1875, having taught herself Hindustani. She worked for three years as a self-supporting volunteer missionary to Amritsar, Punjab, through the Indian Female Normal School and Instruction Society. Life in the Eagle's Nest centres on the life of Walter Gurney, a 17-year old orphan whose father was a missionary in India, who is awaiting word from relatives in England as to what he should do now that his father has died. God answers his prayers in a way he didn't anticipate. When the dashing adventurer Dermot Denis hires young Walter to be his guide into remote Afghanistan, neither has any idea how the trip will unfold. This is an easy-to-read children's novel. The replicas of drawings included in the text add interest and depth to the characters and the setting. Seller Inventory # 202566
