About this Item: Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1880. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First English edition. Spine very slightly rubbed, some foxing of endpapers. Bookplate of Violet Jacob ("Etre et pas avoir"); with an inscription facing, "Violet Jacob from M. Kay Prize Gift No XII 1911. The Curragh"; ticket of William Brown, 5 Castle Street, Edinburgh. James Hepburn (1534/5-1578), fourth Earl of Bothwell and first Duke of Orkney, was the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, having raped her and murdered Lord Darnley. But his closest attachment seems to have been a Norwegian, Anna Throndsen, and when he fled Scotland weeks after the royal marriage in 1567 it was to Norway he went; but he ended up in Denmark, where he was imprisoned by King Frederick II for the rest of his days. Frederik Schiern (1816-1882) was a Danish historian: his book was originally published in 1863 as James Hepburn, Jarl af Bothwell, hans Amholdelse i Norge of Fængselsiv i Danmark, but David Berry, in making his translation (from the revised edition of 1875) argues that Schiern's work is "much more than an account of Bothwell's detention in Norway and imprisonment in Denmark . . . In its English form it is hoped that it may be . . . a valuable contribution of a most interesting period of Scottish history." It is certainly a work of deep scholarship. David Berry (c1822-1887) was a minister successively at Wick and Airdrie; when his son David Anderson-Berry died in 1926 he left a legacy to the Royal Historical Society for a prize in his father's memory - a Gold Medal to be awarded every three years for an essay on James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. The trustees varied the terms, making the prize annual and the terms general, but the first was advertised for 1931, the subject to be Bothwell and the prize £50 and a gold medal. The David Berry Prize, now £250 and on any Scottish historical subject, continues to this day. Violet Jacob (nee Kennedy-Erskine, 1863-1946), an Erskine of Dun, was a great-granddaughter of King William IV on the wrong side of the blanket; she married in 1894 Arthur Otway Jacob, an Irish officer in the Hussars. In 1911 her novel Flemington was published, "the best Scots romance", said John Buchan, "since The Master of Ballantrae". The collection of poems in Scots that brought her fame, Songs of Angus, was not published until 1915. Seller Inventory # S100031
