Item Description: The Cassell Publishing Company, New York, 1891. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition.. O'Reilly (1844-1890) was an early member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and was sentenced to penal servitude in Australia; he escaped, and became a prominent voice in the Irish nationalist diaspora. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition, a posthumous biography issued in the year following Boyle's death. Large octavo, in a maroon pebbled cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 790 pages, indexed. Bumped corners and a bit of rub to the foot of the spine. The covers are bright, and this would be quite a nice copy if the gutters had not split, causing the cloth on the spine to be barely hanging on. Please note this condition issue; despite its attractions. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of restoration or repair. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 002077

Item Description: New York: Cassell Publishing, 1891, 1891. First Edition. With a SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH of O'Reilly dated Boston 1870 tipped in to front free endpaper. O'Reilly (1844-1890) was an Irish nationist and a poet. Condemned to 20 years servitude in Western Australia for his Fenian activities, O'Reilly escaped to the United States in 1869. There he distinguished himself as a poet, journalist, and leader of the Irish-American community, and remained a steadfast champion of Irish rights. A club dedicated in his honor was founded in Springfield in 1880 and still remains active today. Upon O'Reilly's death, Daniel Chester French, renowned for his Lincoln memorial, erected a memorial monument on the Fenway, President John F. Kennedy named O'Reilly his favorite poet, and U2 was one of a number of bands to base songs on his works. This memorial volume, co-edited by his widow, collects his works, including the stirring poem, "The Cry of the Dreamer." The book is in very good condition, with some light wear, and annotations from a previous owner. Two contemporary newspaper clippings are attached. The photograph, signed the year after O'Reilly emigrated to the United States, is in excellent condition. A superb artifact of a great leader. Bookseller Inventory # 14170
