Savage served as a major during the Mexican War and later in the U.S. Senate where he was a opposed to both abolition and secession. He served as a colonel in the Confederate army, commanding the 16th Tennessee Regiment of Donelson's Brigade. His narrative includes a very detailed account of the battle of Perryville.
