Item Description: 1st ed., 1951. Xxxvii + 488 pp., frontis., + 22 sepia photo & other plates & 11 diagrams. D.j., 22 x 15cm. Slightly chipped dust jacket o/w Nr.FINE. C. S. Forester provides the introduction to this biography which was written by Admiral Chalmers at the request of Beatty’s son. The author, who had served under Beatty in his flagship HMS LION during the First World War, collected correspondence of one of the greatest fighting admirals of the last century and one of the most effective First Sea Lords who was not afraid to stand up against Cabinet pressure in order to champion British sea power. But Beatty was also a complex character. The youngest admiral since Nelson, the author examines the man and his career from 1871 to his death in 1936 when his body was placed close to Nelson under the great dome of St. Paul’s. He describes Beatty’s early years to 1895, his exploits on the Nile (1896-8), his role in the Boxer Rebellion (1900), and Beatty’s climb to favour leading up to 1914. The author describes Beatty’s actions at the Battle of Heligoland Bight, the German raid on Scarborough, the Battle of the Dogger Bank, and the Battle of Jutland with the engagement of Beatty’s battle-cruisers. He continues with an account of his time as c-in-c, Grand Fleet and his political fights after the war. Bookseller Inventory # C146B034
