Item Description: New York: Published at 128 Nassau Street, 1852., 1852. As stated in the preface, there is a "greatest eagerness to have" the life and speeches of Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894) in permanent form. This work contains a faithful and graphic account of the life of the remarkable Magyar and his various achievements in addition to a thorough, albeit brief, history of the Hungarian War of Independence, by an officer of the army. Kossuth was a Hungarian lawyer, journalist, politician, and Regent-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the Revolution of 1848-1849. During his lifetime, he was heralded as a freedom fighter and leader of democracy in Europe; Kossuth was also recognized and respected in both the U.K. and the U.S., the latter honoring him with a bronze bust, which is located in the capitol. Octavo. [v]-x, 184 pp. One frontispiece portrait ("L.," from a Daguerreotype by Claudet, London) and three woodcut frontispieces: "Battle of Ofen," "Storming of Mannsworth," and "Battle of Isaszeg." Brown cloth stamped in blind and gilt. Corners and binding extremities worn and rubbed. Small crack at upper front joint. Additional small crack on edge of front board. Bottom of spine worn away less than 1/4 of an inch. Intermittent foxing and offsetting. Contemporary ink inscription on preliminary blank. Pencil annotations on terminal blank. Still a very good, bright copy. First edition. Bookseller Inventory # 16148
