Item Description: G.P. Putnam & Co., New York, 1856. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First printings, 1856-1857. Volumes II, III, and IV are good to very good with some rub to boards, but Volume I is missing about one-third of its spine covering, and its front board is barely attached. The set in half-leather with lovely Dutch-marbled boards and endpapers. Frontispiece portraits (of Maj. Gen. Philip Schuyler, Maj. Gen. Israel Putnam, and Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Greene, as well as The Indispensable Man, himself) are in place, protected by their tissue guards. (In our scans, G.W. frontispiece opposite title page of Volume One is rendered fuzzy by interposition of the tissue guard.) All four volumes bear the Ex Libris bookplate of Stewart Hartshorn (1840-1937), who grew wealthy inventing, patenting and producing the spring-roller window-shade. In the 1870s, he bought 1,500 acres and began development of a planned community in Milburn-Short Hills, N.J., with the stated purpose of creating "a harmonious community for people who appreciated nature . . . where natural beauty would not be destroyed by real estate developments, and where people of congenial tastes could dwell together." Median home prices in the community are now over $1 million. Price is for the set of four; Volume One "as is" with binding problems as mentioned. Biography Founding Father. Reduced from $175.
