About this Item: Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] LIFE ON THEMISSISSIPPI. New York: Charles Webster, 1888.First edition, first state. Original pictorialbrown cloth, gilt, with green floral end papers. An unusual instance of the first state sheetsbeing used by Webster for his re-issue. Mostcopies of the re-issues are comprised ofintermediate or second state sheets. Modestgeneral rubbing, tear in one leaf (duringmanufacture), fore-edge of one gatheringshort-trimmed; but a good solid copy. Clearly anexample of a salvage copy prepared by Webster.James R. Osgood published the first edition in1883 and went bankrupt within a few years. Websterpurchased the unsold sheets and printing plates, and re-issued the original sheets with canceltitle-pages bearing his own imprint in 1888 and1891 (BAL was only aware of the 1891 re-issue).Twain's head appears in flames at p. 441, and thecaption reads "St. Louis Hotel" at p. 443. Twainconsidered this work to be his masterpiece (untilhe wrote JOAN OF ARC). The chapter on "the housebeautiful" is an inspired piece of invective, oneof Twain's great prose moments. Chapter 31contains the first use of fingerprints to solve acrime in fiction, described by Colin Wilson as "aremarkable anticipation of a scientific discoverythat was then known to less than half a dozenmen." Queen's Quorum, p. 45. BAL3411-n. Seller Inventory # 18845

About this Item: Charles L. Webster & Co., New York, 1891. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket as Puiblished. 1st Edition. Original brown pictorial cloth, gilt lettering on spine and gilt illustration on cover. All in very good condition. Head and toe of spine is lightly worn. Owners name and date (1892) neatly hand written on second front fly page. Green floral end papers. The book was first published in 1883 by James R. Osgood who went bankrupt soon after. When Twain started his own publishing firm he put it in the hands of his nephew, Charles L. Webster. Webster acquired Osgood's inventory, including copies already in binding and unbound sheets, as well as the printing plates. He also acquired the brasses for stamping the bindings, and when he stamped the bindings used on the unbound sheets he simply changed the imprint at the foot of the spine. In 1888 and 1891, Webster issued more copies, and like Osgood before him went bankrupt soon after, leaving Twain with huge debts that took a decade to pay. Twain considered this work his masterpiece, and the first half of the book contains some of his most poetic prose about the subject he knew best and which served two years later as the setting for his greatest novel. "Chapter XXXI is a complete short story in itself and contains the first fictional use of fingerprints as a means of criminal identification." More than 300 illustrations. 624 pages.
