First Edition. With frontispiece and over 60 full page illustrations from photographs. 8vo, in the publisher's very attractive bright green cloth lettered and attractively decorated in white. xxiii, 293 pp. A fine, bright copy, beautifully preserved, strong and tight and clean. FIRST EDITION. Though born in England, Shelley found his spiritual home in Italy. Self-exiled he spent the last four years of his life there, where he wrote some of his greatest works. Author Anna Benneson McMahan traces those years through poetry and letters and follows the Shelley pilgrimage. The introduction begins, thus: ".it is the Italian note in Shelley's poetry that makes him the particular kind of great poet that he is. Self-exiled from England at the age of twenty-six, he never returned to that country, but spent the remainder of his life, four years, in Italy; here his genius developed toward maturity, here his muse found a congenial home and utterance. Sky, storm, tree, mountain, and sea, the whole spirit of the Italian landscape lives in Shelley's verse".

"English lawyer, intimate friend and biographer of Shelley. At the request of Shelley's widow and family, Hogg undertook Shelley's biography, the first two volumes of which appeared in 1858. Dissatisfied with the results, Shelley's family denied him further access to the materials necessary to complete the work.
