About this Item: J. Rowlands & Benjamin Stitchall C.1742., London, 1742. Rebacked expertly with a brown quarter calf saving the original calf boards, blind tooled rules and design, 6 raised bands in 7 compartments, crimson label with tooled gilt lettering on 2, Title in black and red. , John Campbell produced at the age of twenty eight a Military History of the late Prince Eugene of Savoy and the late John, Duke of Marlborough? illustrated with variety of copper-plates of battles, sieges, plans & etc., carefully engraved by Claude Du Bose, who issued it without the compiler?s name in 1736. In compiling it Campbell availed himself largely of the Marquis de Quincy?s ?Histoire Militaire du regne de Louis Quatorze, and of the works of Dumont and Rousset on Prince Eugene. (DNB)Prince Eugene of Savoy (François Eugène; 18 October 1663 ? 21 April 1736), was one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history, rising to the highest offices of state at the Imperial court in Vienna. Born in Paris to aristocratic Italian parents, Eugene grew up around the French court of King Louis XIV. Based on his poor physique and bearing, the Prince was initially prepared for a career in the church, but by the age of 19 he had determined on a military career. Rejected by Louis XIV for service in the French army, Eugene moved to Austria and transferred his loyalty to the Habsburg Monarchy.Spanning six decades, Eugene served three Holy Roman Emperors: Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI. He first saw action against the Ottoman Turks at the Siege of Vienna in 1683 and the subsequent War of the Holy League, before serving in the Nine Years' War, fighting alongside his cousin, the Duke of Savoy. However, the Prince's fame was secured with his decisive victory against the Ottomans at the Battle of Zenta in 1697, earning him European-wide fame. Eugene enhanced his standing during theWar of the Spanish Succession where his partnership with the Duke of Marlborough secured victories against the French on the fields of Blenheim (1704), Oudenarde (1708), and Malplaquet (1709); he gained further success in the war as Imperial commander in northern Italy, most notably at the Battle of Turin (1706)John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, Prince of Mindelheim, KG, 26 May 1650 ? 16 June 1722 O.S), was an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs through the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Rising from a lowly page at the court of the House of Stuart, he loyally served James, Duke of York, through the 1670s and early 1680s, earning military and political advancement through his courage and diplomatic skill. Churchill's role in defeating the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 helped secure James on the throne, yet just three years later he abandoned his Catholic patron for the Protestant Dutchman, William of Orange. Honoured for his services at William's coronation with the earldom of Marlborough, he served with further distinction in the early years of the Nine Years' War, but persistent charges of Jacobitism brought about his fall from office and temporary imprisonment in the Tower. It was not until the accession of Queen Anne in 1702 that Marlborough reached the zenith of his powers and secured his fame and fortune., Size : Small folio (223mm x 337m, Illustrated with 2 portraits and 10 large fold out plates. Plates are engraved by I. Carnvitham; Smith; H. Roberts and Bickham. , P. Blank (2), Frontis, Title, Part 1: 1-134; Part 2, Frontis, 1-620, Index (20). Edges tinted red.
