Item Description: W. Andrews and L. Blake, Boston, 1807. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Good. First American. Covers show scuffing, scraping and rubbing. Notable edgewear and bumped corners. Chipping at the spine tips, particularly at the bottom where a 1-inch piece of leather is missing, exposing the inner page edges. Page edges soiled. The good news is that the spine and hinges are square, straight and secure. There are 500 text pages followed by a 43 page index and several endpapers. There is a illustration opposite page 472 showing examples of Johnson's handwriting. The pages show browning and wrinkling throughout, as well as endemic spotting. This is a complete and very serviceable copy of this famous biography which the modern Johnsonian critic Harold Bloom has claimed is the greatest biography written in the English language. Boswell's surname has passed into the English language as a term (Boswell, Boswellian, Boswellism) for a constant companion and observer, especially one who records those observations in print. In A Scandal in Bohemia, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes affectionately says of Dr. Watson, who narrates the tales, "I am lost without my Boswell. This copy is the first American edition (based on the 5th London edition). Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. James Boswell (1740 - 1795), was a Scottish biographer and diarist. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Trade. Bookseller Inventory # 001169
