The third printing, published by Farrar Strauss and Cudahy in 1960. Lowell has inscribed this copy to Syracuse University's formidable and highly regarded English Professor William Wasserstrom on May 2nd 1962. Shortly after Wasserstrom's death in 1985 Syracuse began annually awarding the William Wasserstrom Prize for Outstanding Graduate Teaching. A fine copy of the book in a near fine dust jacket with some faint rubbing to the edges and a small chip to the base of the rear jacket panel. An excellent copy in the somewhat frayed, rubbed and lightly creased jacket. Black and white illustrated title page by Frank Parker. First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Francis Mattson, Robert Lowell"; the recipient is almost certainly the Curator of the Berg Collection, New York Public Library. Near fine in very good or better dustwrapper. Advance Review Copy with slip and photograph laid in. Also laid in is a letter from the publisher sending the book to Daniel Hoffman, with additional material and mentioning a reading Lowell is giving at Bryn Mawr. Inscribed by Lowell to Hoffman and his wife the poet Elizabeth McFarland: "For Elizabeth & Dan with affection deepened by the Three Millionaires' Day and still more by my swift long visit. Cal. Robert Lowell April 1966." With Hoffman's penciled ownership signature. Hoffman served as the Consultant in Poetry of the Library of Congress (the equivalent of the United States Poet Laureate) in 1973-1974. Lowell served in the same position from 1947-1948. This is Lowell's most influential book, the collection which defined the term "confessional poetry." Winner of the National Book Award. Bookseller Inventory # 418007
