First American edn. 8vo, pp. xx, 435; xii, 478 + adv. Bound in blind stamped brown cloth, some staining inside but a very good copy. "George Henry Lewes (1817 - 1878) was an English philosopher and critic of literature and theatre. He became part of the mid-Victorian ferment of ideas which encouraged discussion of Darwinism, positivism, and religious scepticism. However, he is perhaps best known today for having openly lived with George Eliot, a soul-mate whose life and writings were enriched by their friendship, although they were never married."[Wikipedia].

Bancroft had studied for some time in Germany, had in fact met Goethe, and was instrumental in introducing German literature and educational theory into the U.S. This is certainly one of the earlier American notices of Goethe, known in the U.S. at that time primarily through the numerous editions of The Sorrows of Young Werther issued post 1784.
