First Edition
Oblong 16mo. 6.5 x 4.25 in. [32 pp (unpaginated).], w/ 19 sepia-tinted photo plates, all w/ woodcut borders. Black printed softcovers, raised embossed silver lettering on front cover (slight shelfwear, very light foxing on title), still VG bright copy. First edition of this exceedingly scarce automobile travel promotional brochure for the Gray & Davis Lamps, chronicling the adventures of a 1912 Peerless 36 Touring Car fitted with a 48 horsepower engine, and Gray & Davis Lamps were standard equipment. The unidentified Edwardian-era American sent not only descriptions of the extended trip from Algiers through Bou Saada, and onto El Hamsel, followed by excursions to Biskra, Tunisia, and then shipped to Naples. They describe viewing the Roman Forum by Gray & Davis searchlight, and were often able to safely drive at night on Italian roads. Gray & Davis who were the originators of bullet shaped automobile lamps, also manufactured dynamos, and electric starters which in 1913 became standard equipment for Peerless, Hupmobile, and 1914 Ford Model T automobiles. No copies in Worldcat; See: Gray and Davis, History of Early American Automobiles 1891-1929, Chapter 9.
