About this Item: Privatley Printed, Indiana, 1971. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 72 pp, preface, Introduction by Nancy Niblack Baxter, The Letters (May 7, 1861 - May 19, 1865; Afterword with b&w illustrations throughout. Privately printed for the family of John R. McClure as a memorial tribute on the 110th anniversary of the West Virginia campaign. Introduceds and Edited by Nancy Niblack Baxter: First Edition, 1971. "The letters in this collection were found in a secret compartment of an old bureau in the farmhouse now owned by Judge John L. Niblack. They were written to his sister mary and 'the girl he left behind', Frances Anne Purcell, whom he married in 1866. Among the first volunteers of the Civil War hurrying to rendezvous camp to join Lincoln's army was the eighteen-year-old John R. McClure of Knox County, Indiana. This book is a record of his experiences as a private in the Fourteenth Regiment of the famous Gibraltar Brigade of the Army of the Potomac -- the first Indiana regiment to be organized for three years' duty. Soon dissillusioned, his experiences on the battlefields of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, detailed in the letters, taught him that while war was often adventure, more often it was friendships shattered by guns, muddy marching, and death as the flash of artillery. Having gone out hating an impersonal rebel, John R., it seems returned hating war itself for reasons that become quite clear as the letters unfold in the bloody swamps of Virginia." from the Introduction. Price clipped. Age-toned spine dj. Small closed tear bottom edge rear free endpaper, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Orange cloth with black lettering to spine, and maps on endpapers. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 004102

About this Item: The Lincoln National Life Foundation, Fort Wayne, IN, 1932. Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth spine with paper label and brown paper over boards with paper label. 93pp. Color frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Mild binding edgewear (mainly corners), with spine label darkened, though internally fine and pristine. A lovely and tight first edition of this handsome R.R. Donnelley & Sons production issued in conjunction with the unveiling of this statue in Fort Wayne, Indiana by the noted American sculptor (1885-1966). This handsome copy bears a choice photograph addition: Tipped to the inner flyleaf is a fine, original, likely sole surviving print of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph of a smiling Manship alongside a small-scale version of his equestrian statue of Grant Ulysses S. Grant, with Bruce Catton (1899-1978) admiring it from one side and Civil War authority/radio broadcasting innovator Carl Haverlin (1899-1985) doing the same from the other side; when the full-size version surrounded by soldiers hoisting cannons was cast in 1922, it cost $250,000, making it the most expensive statue in the United States. This small casting was apparently made during the Civil War centennial circa 1960 for the interior of Grant's Tomb. Haverlin served as president of music licensing pioner BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), and the photographer who took this image, Hy Reiter, served with BMI's publicity and promotion department. A sharp copy of an uncommon title with outstanding photograph addition. Seller Inventory # 42437
