Same date on title page and copyright page. Title is at the top of a list by the author on back cover. There is foxing spotting to the spine and some foxing to the paste downs and end pages. No names or internal markings. The dust jacket has tear-holes along the edges, small chips and tears along the top and bottom edges. There is a chip to the base of spine, and a tear to the top of spine at back cover. There are some signs of soiling, and there is a water stain to the spine. Item Description: Linden Hall, 1852. Unlined stationery, 8 x 10, 4 pages (1 page folded in half). Light soiling, fold creases else very good. In addition to board and tuition some of the other expenditures were instructions for music, drawing, French, geography, physiology, botany, supplies, i.e., drawing mats, blank books, quills, French dictionary, French bible, personal i.e., washing, shoe strings, hose, soap, dress alterations, mantuamaker, stamps and envelopes. Written in a different hand from the person who wrote up the detailed list, "Recd in full of A. Russel Esqu. Eugene A. Foucauff (sp?) Principal." Receipt with information on three sides. A. Russel is Anna Davenport Russel of Detroit, the older sister of Sarah Davenport who was 16 in 1850. Sarah's brother-in-law, Dr. George B. Russel, a Pennsylvania native, graduated from West Chester Academy in nearby Chester County. Linden Hall, founded in 1746, was a private non-denominational boarding school for girls and boys, later becoming in 1794 a girls-only school. The young ladies learned subjects like history, geography, mathematics, and for a modest fee they could take classes in drawing, painting, home economy and horticulture. Linden Hall is the oldest girls boarding school in the United States today. Bookseller Inventory # 99-1222

Large format sheet music in original illustrated wraps. A six sheet piece of music by Charles Grobe, "respectfully inscribed to the Young Ladies of Linden Hall (formerly Young Ladies Institute)." The front cover, printed in stone lithography, depicts the "rear view" of the Linden Hall grounds mid 19th entury. Music notation comnprises three sheets with no linguistic content; the rear page is publisher ads. Some light soiling to covers and separation at folds. Trace glue residue at spine edge suggests the piece was at one time bound in a collection. Quite scarce with only two copies recorded on OCLC database records. A nice early ephemeral piece related to the oldest girls boarding/day school in the U.S. G++. Bookseller Inventory # 22565
