Cloth, folio, title printed in red and black, 43 cm, [iv] , 52 pp, coloured frontispiece and 2 coloured plates, 39 monochrome plates, 5 text figures, From a contemporary review: "After a short introduction and a chapter on the history of the manuscript, [Mr. Millar] describes it fully and precisely under the following heads: 1, contents, text and gloss; 2, the writing of the text and gloss; 3, the decoration. The chapter on the handwriting contains an interesting account of the scribe's devices to keep his lines within the right-hand boundary of the columns, with a page of 60 reproductions illustrating them, but the next chapter, on the decoration of the manuscript, is naturally the most important for readers of this magazine. In it, after a discussion of the styles of the miniatures and of the illuminations, particulars are given, based mainly on the results of Professor Laurie's researches, of the medium and colours used, and then a detailed description of every piece of decoration in the book, specifying the colour of every part and elucidated occasionally by diagrams. The collotype plates are of very good quality.[t]he three coloured plates do not do full justice to the originals, in which the colours are actually brighter than the reproductions would lead one to expect." Bookplate of Charles Travis Clay [Sir Charles Travis Clay, Librarian of the House of Lords, 1922-1956] on front pastedown endpaper, extremities and small area of rear board rubbed, otherwise Near Fine.
