First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Quarto. viii, 150, [2]pp., illustrated with 30 mounted albumen silver prints by Andrew Russell. Each photograph measures 6"x 8". Contemporary dark green half morocco and pebbled cloth over beveled boards, gilt spine with raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The spine and edges of the boards are moderately rubbed, light soiling on the rear endpapers and back of the final mounted print, some light fading at the edges of a few photographs, near fine. A handsome, beautifully bound copy of Russell's important photographic record of Ferdinand Hayden's pioneering surveying expedition of the Rocky Mountains along the transcontinental railroad. Russell ranks as one of a handful of landscape photographers who shaped our perception of the American West in the 19th Century, and his work "stands alongside of Carleton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge and Timothy O'Sullivan in its aesthetic power and technical virtuosity." During the Civil War Russell worked for Matthew Brady and served as a captain in the U.S. Military Railroad Construction Corps. In 1865 he became the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad, and served as their official photographer to document the building of the transcontinental railroad during the years 1868-1869. This survey expedition includes many of Russell's iconic landscape views taken in the western territories of Utah, Wyoming, and California, in which he often juxtaposes monumental geological elements to manmade structures and individual men and women. A scarce, handsome copy with all thirty mounted photographs in fine condition. A list of all 30 views is available.
