Item Description: Porto, Typographia Commercial Portuense, 1843., 1843. 8°, contemporary half mottled sheep (minor wear), smooth spine with gilt bands and red lettering piece with short title, gilt letter, text block edges sprinkled blue. Small wood-engraved papal tiara on title page. Overall in very good to fine condition. xxiv, 238 pp., (1 blank l.) *** First and only edition in Portuguese of this work arguing for the pope's authority over all ecclesiastical affairs, particularly the appointment of bishops, who receive their power from Christ via the pope. The question came up during wars, when secular rulers appointed bishops because communication with the pope was impossible. Moreno also discusses more broadly the relation between Church and State. Among the authorities cited are Isidore of Seville, Fenelon, Bossuet, Francisco Ramos de Manzano. Moreno ends with a chapter on "Conselho de Villanova ás Americas, applaudido pelo Desenganador, absurdo, schismatico, attentatorio dos direitos e attribuições do Primado" (p. 238). In the translator's preface, Almeida Garrett comments on the highly persuasive effect Moreno's essay has had in Latin America, and expresses the hope that it will have the same effect in Rio de Janeiro, where in 1835 the government had refused to withdraw the nomination of an unworthy bishop. Although the text ends with "Fim da primeira secção do Ensaio," the second part was not published in Spanish until 1836, and the two were not published together in Spanish until the three-volume edition of Buenos Aires, 1846. The second part was apparently never translated to Portuguese.José Ignacio Moreno (1767-1841) was archdeacon at the Cathedral of Lima.Alexandre José da Silva de Almeida Garrett (b. Porto, d. 1867), who translated the work and added a 15-page introduction, was the brother of the famous author and statesman João Baptista da Silva Leitão Almeida Garrett, 1.º Visconde de Almeida Garrett.*** Innocêncio I, 37: without collation; on the author, see also VIII, 38, 417; XX, 32. Item Description: Franekeræ: imprinsis Johannis Dhuiringh bibliopolæ typus Idzardi Alberti typographi, 1651. 8vo, (155x93mm), [9],117p. printed in Roman, Italic and Hebrew type, a faint stain in the fore - head are throughout, but generally a very acceptable copy in a contemporary sprinkled calf wallet binding as discussed in detail below. The binding on this early Hebrew – Latin grammar is of considerable interest in its own right. It is a variation of a wallet binding but without the flap which usually is provided to tuck in. The text block is sewn (through four sewing stations) on two leather thongs which are set into the boards. However, the tail thong at one hinge has broken. Since this book 'starts at the back' – as it were, what would normally be the rear fore edge turn-in is unglued (the head and tail turns-in are pasted down) and is left as a flap that extends for the full depth and almost the full height of the text block. The front (though really one should write rear) flap is of a similar size and has a semi-circular thumb notch cut out of the leather in the centre. The rear covering is pasted down onto the board, while the front is left free and the board interior is coloured red. Thus this construction provides a useful space for keeping [thin] things in. A simple two-line blind ruled frame ornaments both the front and rear covers which are in remarkably good state, and the edges of the text block are sprinkled with red pigment. The edges are slightly rubbed, the rear tail edge being slightly worn, and there is a small fragment missing from the tail of the backstrip. Such bookbinding reference material has we have been able to examine offers no parallels to this binding; one can but speculate that it is best described as a wallet binding and was perhaps intended for the use of students. Item Description: 2 books in one binding. Both: Jacobus Wolfius (Jakob Wulff), Hamburg 1588. Folio. (10)+60+(2)+1572 pages. Bound in a later, thick, full calf binding. Sides rubbed and with small tears to the upper layer of leather. Titleleaf to the bible is torn (40 % missing), but restored with a layer of paper, so it is a whole leaf again. First 10 leaves of the Bible restored with a thin layer of paper, preserving the pages, but enabling reading. A few wormholes (also through the restored leaves) and stains. 16th century notes in hand to the margins of the foreword and the last leaf of the "Cubus Alphabeticus", a bit trimmed by the new binding. Some restaurations to the inner margins inside the bible. * The "Cubus Alphabeticus" is bound after the first 5 leaves of latin introduction to the Bible, but before the actual bible. Both works are complete, besides the torn titleleaf. The Bible falls in four parts: The Pentateuch, The Prior Prophets, The Posterior Prophets and the Hagiographa.** Restored, but overall pretty well-preserved 16th century Hebrew bible, beautifully printed in large Hebrew lettering, introducing a helpful tool to the readers, as the lettering of the words is divided into the root part of the word (in full print) and the non-root part (printed with hollow, cut-out charcters).
