Item Description: Geoffrey Bles, 1950. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Published by Geoffrey Bles, London; 1950. 8vo. This is the First edition, first printing of the children’s classic by C. S. Lewis, with ‘First published 1950’ to the copyright page. The book is in Near Fine condition, tightly bound in original green cloth boards with silver gilt lettering to the spine. There is some loss of colour to the boards along the edges and to the spine ends and the corners. There is also some minor bumping to the corners and spine. There is one small mark to the rear board, otherwise the boards are in very nice condition. Internally, there is a gift inscription and ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. The pages are amazingly clean, bright and free from signs of ageing. There is some slight toning and spotting to the endpapers and extreme edges (only visible when book is closed), otherwise this lovely book is in excellent condition inside. The dustjacket is in Very Good condition, with some chipping and wear to the top and bottom edges, wth slight loss to the T at the start of the title, and a small tear through the L and I of Lion. There is a mark below the title, at the top of the illustration, which perhaps originated from the residue of a label or sticker. There is some minor rubbing to the rear panel of the jacket and some spotting to the wraparounds. The jacket is, however unclipped, with the original price of 8s. 6d. net to the inside of the front flap. The jacket is overall in nicer condition than it sounds, retaining it’s original colour and the lovely illustration to the front. In all, this is a lovely collectible copy of this ever popular children’s classic and would be an excellent addition to any collection. Bookseller Inventory # 206

A complete set of first printings, uniformly bound in full burgandy morocco with raised bands, gilt top edges, decorative spine stamping and marbled end papers. Internally the books are Near Fine. The odd spot of foxing or finger-smudge, discrete owner's name on half-title of book four, a small tear on the half-title of book seven repaired with tape. Generally a very pleasing set.C.S. Lewis' landmark fantasy series, one of the great works of children literature. The Chronicles of Narnia has sold over 100 million copies in nearly 50 languages, and has had a significant influence on many other noted fantasy authors including: Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman and J. K. Rowling. "I found myself thinking about the wardrobe route to Narnia when Harry is told he has to hurl himself at a barrier in King's Cross Station - it dissolves and he's on platform Nine and Three-Quarters, and there's the train for Hogwarts."Although Lewis drew upon many sources for the series, including his own personal experiences as a child and his work sheltering children during the Blitz, as well as Greek, Roman, Celtic and Christian mythology, the inspiration for the first novel had been an image he'd carried in his head since his adolescence: "The Lion all began with a picture of a Faun carrying an umbrella and parcels in a snowy wood. This picture had been in my mind since I was about sixteen. Then one day, when I was about forty, I said to myself: 'Let's try to make a story about it.'". Bookseller Inventory # 1792

Item Description: London: Geoffrey Bles, [The Bodley Head] 1950-1956, 1956. 7 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, raised bands to spines, titles and extra decoration to spines gilt, single rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. First editions, first impressions throughout this complete set of the beloved Narnia series. 'The immediate inspiration for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy. The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning. As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author'. Oxford Companion to Children Literature, p.370. Bookseller Inventory # 116483
