The Kemmer and Bhabha papers posit the existence of a neutral pion (later to be the first unstable particle to be discovered using an accelerator."Superfluidity is the remarkable manifestation of quantum mechanics at the macroscopic level" (Balibar, The discovery of superfluidity, 1). Kapitsa believed that helium-II had something in common with superconductors, and in "Viscosity of Liquid Helium" wrote the now famous sentence "by analogy with superconductors?the helium below the lambda point enters a special state which might be called superfluid" (Kapitsa, 1938). His intuition still stuns physicists because superfluids and superconductors are indeed analogous states of matter. Much has been written about how Kapista could possibly have thought of this. At the same time, Allen and Misener were working on helium and as a result of their experiments, presented a series of measurements in which they concluded: "The observed type of flow? in which the velocity becomes almost independent of pressure, most certainly cannot be treated as laminaror even as ordinary turbulent flow. Consequently, any known formula cannot, from our data, give a value of viscosity which would have much meaning (Allen and Misener, 1938). This paper appeared back to back with Kapitsa's in Nature."It is now understood that helium-II can be described as a two-fluid mixture - part a normal fluid and part a superfluid, in which atoms have condensed into a single quantum state. FIRST EDITION, a complete set of the papers which document Feynman's solution of the problem of superfluidity in liquid helium. "In 1950 Feynman left Cornell to join the faculty of the California Institute of Technology, where, except for a year in Brazil (1951-1952), he would spend the rest of his career. At Caltech he turned his attention to the problem of superfluidity in liquid helium. Russian theorist Lev Landau had shown that the remarkable ability of superfluid helium at low temperature to flow without resistance resulted from the fact that the liquid could take up energy from its surroundings only in certain very restricted ways. Feynman succeeded in tracing Landau's observation to its quantum mechanical roots. Feynman diagrams would later become an important research tool in this field, but Feynman did not use them to solve this problem.
