About this Item: Oxford University Press / The Franklin Library, Oxford, 1979. Leather bound. All volumes: midnight leather with gilt OUP insignia and other decoration all around. 5 raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. AEG. Silk moire end papers with matching satin place-holder ribbon. No dust jackets, as issued. Total page numbers over all 8 volumes: cxliv, [9], 9,846 with no illustrations in any volume. The dictionary volumes and book of American verse were publishd in 1979. All other volumes were published in 1978. The book rack, custom-designed for this set, has markers showing where each book should be placed for best visual effect. This magnificent set (including the book stand) is obviously heavy, coming in at 50 pounds (nearly 23 kilos) shipping weight, and will require extra postage. Issued by The Franklin Library in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of The Oxford University Press. Publisher's Note (to the actual dictionaries): "For the suggestion of this latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in compact form the publshers are indebted to Mr. Albert Boni of Readex Microprinte Corporation whose Compact Editions of the British Museum Catalogue and other reference works pioneeered this method of publication." There are four pages of the regular dictionary to one compact page, so the print is very small. You might need a magnifying glass. (The one to accompany the set is missing.) The dictionaries are perfect for someone who loves the OED but is limited on space! The entire set would make a wonderful gift. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations includes a Note to the Second Edition (1953); The Compilers to the Reader (1941); Introduction; Corrigenda; the quotations, an index, and a Greek index. The Oxford Companion to English Literature includes prefaces to the first, second, third, and fourth editions. Each volume was edited by a different person or team of editors and includes, variously, a preface by the editor/s or an introduction. Will be shipped in multiple boxes, because of wooden stand. VG. A beautiful, clean, tight set in general but with a few small things: light ruffling to sheets in the dictionary volumes, as they're very thin; a bit of the gilding is worn away on the bottom edges (see photo); a slight blemish to front hinge at head of spine on Volume I dictionary (see photo); and the very outer edges of moire end papers are beginning to fade, as is common in these editions; small, almost-invisible scratch to back cover of A Dictionary of Modern English Usage. The set likely was unused, except for a brief initial look at Volume I of the dictionary. 966/7500 copies, each volume numbered by hand. Seller Inventory # 161704
