Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Original source material: book is a children's book written and illustrated by Scottish author Helen Bannerman and published by Grant Richards in October 1899. Sambo is a South Indian boy who lives with his father and mother, named Black Jumbo and Black Mumbo respectively. While out walking, Sambo encounters four hungry tigers, and surrenders his colorful new clothes, shoes and umbrella so that they will not eat him. The tigers are vain and each thinks that he is better dressed than the others. They have a massive argument and chase each other around a tree until they are reduced to a pool of ghee (clarified butter). Sambo then recovers his clothes and collects the ghee, which his mother uses to make pancakes. This book also includes Little Black Sambo and the Baby Elephant, Little Black Sambo and the Tiger Kitten, Little Black Sambo and the Monkey People, Little Black Sambo in the Bear's Den, Little Black Sambo and the Crocodiles.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair/Good. First Thus. Book appears well read with lower 1 1/2" of spine cracked and peeling at hinge, but still attached, the frontispiece is loose but present and a previous owner's name is on first page, dated 1909. Front cover is a touch sun faded but the pastedown is attached and complete. OW book has general wear at edges, tips and extremities, yet remains solid and complete with no other writing or marks within. A fairly square looking copy of this desirable title from the Christmas Stocking series. Book is 56 pages printed on one side only, so when it was bound the book appears twice as thick as if there were 112 pages. Introduction by L. Frank Baum, author of Wizard Of Oz. 3 pages of ads at rear for other titles from this publisher. A very fragile edition, indeed.
