About this Item: W.H. Lizars, Edinburgh, 1842. Disbound. Condition: Very Good. 1 hand coloured plate, slightly marked. A volume from Jardine's 'Naturalist's Library' series. Jardine made natural history popular with this series, running to forty volumes between 1833-1843. It was published by his brother in law, the Edinburgh printer and engraver, William Home Lizars. The series featured many well known artists, including Edward Lear. Each volume also featured an interesting essay article upon a well known naturalist with a portrait of the individual. Jardine edited the whole series, wrote a number of the volumes, and invited other well known naturalists to contribute some more specialist topics, such as Dogs and Butterflies. Description: This original antique print originates from 'Oeuvres completes, - suivies de ses continuateurs Daubenton, Lacepede, Cuvier, Dumeril, Poiret, Lesson et Geoffreoy-St-Hilaire; seule edition complete avec figures coloriees.', by Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, published 1828-1833 Bruxelles, chez Th. Lejeune, Libraire-editeurs.Artists and Engravers: Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (Sept.7, 1707 - April 16, 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptist Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Darwin himself, in his foreword to the 6th edition of the origin of Species, credited Aristotle with foreshadowing the concept of natural selection but also stated that "the first author who in modern times has treated it in a scientific spirit was Buffon". The Lycee Buffon in Paris is named after him. Buffon is best remembered for his great work Histoire naturelle, generale et particuliere (1749-1778: in 36 volumes, 8 additional volumes published after his death by Lacepede). About this Item: Driffield, 1876. Condition: Very Good. Engraved By Fawcett of Driffield (illustrator). An original antique hand-coloured engraving, mounted (matted) and ready to frame. The colouring is contemporary and is delicate and most pleasing, as were the all the products of his Driffield workshop. A plate produced for "Les Oiseaux Gibier", by H de la Blanchère, Edited par J Rothschild, 1876, from woodblocks by Fawcett of Driffield, originally drawn for "British Game Birds and Wildfowl" by Beverley R Morris, first published in 1855. This plate has never been bound into a volume, probably originating from Fawcett's original stock. Naumann is regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe. The plates which show birds in their natural setting are by such artists as Keulemans, Kleinschmidt, Geisler, Von Riesenthal, De Maes and Goering. Condition: Excellent given age. About this Item: [1850-1857 or later], 1857. Frame 41 x 47 cm. Image area 21 x 26,5 cm. Hand coloured wood engraving. A fine image executed by the great Benjamin Fawcett, a genius wood engraver. He collaborated for many years with Francis Open Morris who wrote among many other things books on natural history and birds. They were very successful together and their works have become british classics. The present plate was published for "A History of British Birds". The first edition was published in 1850-1857. Several editions were published throughout the rest of the 19th. century. It is not clear to which one the present plate was issued since all have hand coloured plates. Gilt frame. About this Item: Antique print, titled: 'Petit Outarde ou Canne-petiere, male.' - Plate 25. It shows: Little Bustard Handcoloured etching/engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: From: 'Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux.', (A part of Histoire Naturelle.) by Comte de Buffon, published in Paris from 1770 to 1786. This is considered the most important 18th c. ornithological work, and most the beautiful ed. of Buffon's works, containing 1008 handcoloured plates. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Francois-Nicolas Martinet' after an anonymous artist. Francois Nicolas Martinet (1725-1804) was a French engineer and engraver. He worked for the court. His work is varried: from illustrating plays and operas to drawing and engraving landscapes, portraits of notables and scenes of court life at Versailles. He lived and worked during one of the most tumultuous times in French history, witnessing the reigns of Louis XV, Louis XVI / Marie Antoinette and the terror of the French Revolution, followed by the ascent of Napoleon. He was the brother of the female engraver Angelique Martinet (c.1731 - c. 1780). Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (September 7, 1707 - April 16, 1788). French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. About this Item: [c1790]., 1790. Watercolour and ink on paper, 26 cm by 18 cm, [unsigned], framed. Sarah Stone (1760-1844) was employed by Sir Ashton Lever to record the contents of his private museum. The museum consisted of animal specimens and ethnographic material brought back by British expeditions to Australia, the Americas, Africa and the far east in the last twenty years of the eighteenth century. She painted actively from about 1777 to 1806 which was the date of the dispersal of the Museum Leverianum. Sarah Smith (she married in 1789) was the most competent natural history illustrator of her day and provided illustrations for Shaw's Museum Leverianum, Latham's Synopsis of birds, Pennant's A view of Hindoostan and White's Journal to New South Wales.
