About this Item: London: A & C. Black 1932, 1932. Original pale blue cloth with green titles and design to the front board. Pictorial end papers. 8 colour and 8 black and white illustrations of Fairy themes. Overall a sound copy. The blue cloth is clean, but a touch faded to the spine. There is a small spot of discolouration to the corner of the front board only. Internally clean and tidy throughout, but with foxing to the closed page edge. There is a little foxing to the pages, and slightly more to the half title. Annie and Ida Rentoul, were sisters from Melbourne, Australian. Annie Rattray (1882-1978) and Ida (1888-1960) were children of the Rev. John Laurence Rentoul. He was a Presbyterian Minister. (for a while the moderator general of the Church. During the war he was chaplain-general of the Australian military forces. Annie wrote the text, and Ida provided the illustrations. viii, 1-103 pp + plates. Seller Inventory # 1361

Blue titles to spine with blue titles and woodland motif framed within blue border on upper cover of olive green cloth boards. Binding is very firm and tight. Covers are clean with slight bumping to head of upper and lower covers. Even tanning to page edges. Just a very light touch of spotting and sellotape shadows to the pictorial end papers. Interior text and illustrations are clean with no inscriptions. Not ex-library. Clipped pictorial d/j is lightly soiled with slight wear to the cover edges but no tears or chips. A story about children and fairies with 8 colour and 8 b/w plates. The board covers appear to be covered in hand-painted paper with a paper title label on front. The edges and corners are very worn with the board showing through. The cloth spine is detached from the back cover and worn at the ends but still in place. Pages vii and 1/2 have closed tears at bottom; plate facing p.9 has closed tear at top; plate facing p.26 is detached but present; plate facing p. 57 has closed tears top and bottom. Page 43 has a large piece out of top corner which is present. With all its faults this is still a lovely book which has been much handled, read, and surely loved. Size: 7 1/2" x 10 1/2". Hardcover. Edges and corners rubbed; small stain on cover label; marginal tears on several pages; foxing on half-title page but not on the plates; inner hinges cracked. Despite the condition, the book is tight and complete. The stories were set in a fantastic land peopled with Australian koalas, kangaroos, kookaburras, and possums mostly in the Australian bush. Printed paper label to the front board. With sixteen plates by Outhwaite; eight in color and eight in black & white. The covers are well worn about the corners and lower edges with boards showing at the corners and to about half of the lower edges. Some uneven fading and evidence of damp staining to the front cover. Wrinkling to the lower, front. Darkening to the cover label. Foxing to the endpapers and sporadically throughout. Foxing also to the upper page edges. The plates are largely unaffected by this and are quite clean. Some light spotting to the spine. There is a curious inscription in fountain pen to the front free endpaper that reads as follows: "To Annie, With best love & very good wish for Christmas & New Year. From Ida."
