About this Item: Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1942, 1942. Oblong quarto. Original green cloth, front cover with design and titles blocked in white, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom green cloth slipcase. Touch of rubbing to cloth at ends of spine, in the price clipped dust jacket with a touch of toning to panels, light wear to extremities of the fragile jacket, short closed tears to top edges, a small spot of residue to lower rear edge. A lovely copy. Colour illustrations in text throughout. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on title page, "Greetings from 'The Little House' to another 'Little House', Virginia Lee Burton." The recipients, Peggy and Dorothy Norton, were sisters and members of the Folly Cove Designers, the textile collective founded by Virginia Lee Burton in 1941 using design principles which she taught to her neighbours. The story of The Little House was based on Burton's own experience of moving her house from the street to a field of daisies with apple trees. The 1943 Caldecott Medal winner was the basis for the 1952 Walt Disney animated short directed by Wilfred Jackson. The 2012 Library School journal named it one of the top 100 picture books of all time and has been included in the Grolier list of 100 children's titles. Inscribed copies of this book are extremely rare: although a few signed copies are recorded, this is the only inscribed copy known to us. Seller Inventory # 111800
