About this Item: Roberts Brothers, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., 1886. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Ricketson, Walton (Louisa M. Alcott Sculpture shown in Frontispiece) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) came from an unusual family, memorialized in "Little Women." Her father founded a school to practice his theories of childhood education. It failed. The family moved to Concord, where they became neighbors and friends with the Hawthornes, Emersons, and Thoreaus. Her father established a utopian community. It failed. The family's welfare became dependent upon his wife's successful social work in Boston and his daughter's writing, which eventually became the family's financial mainstay after Louisa's financial successes with "Little Women" (1868), "Good Wives" (1869), "Little Men" (1871) and "Jo's Boys" (1886). Alcott was prolific, but it was the books that celebrated the trials and tribulations of the March sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy),( idealizations of the family life she and her sisters Anna, Elizabeth, and May had experienced) that were most popular and remain so today. Alcott blended humor and pathos in vivid characterizations that appealed to a juvenile audience. "Jo's Boys" expanded the gender spectrum and scope of her settings, broadening from home to careers and marriages of the sister's children and their schoolmates. Alcott was an ardent supporter of women's rights. Her women succeeded in medical, acting, and painting careers. She affirmed the value of a single woman's life. She maintained strong allegiance to True Womanhood (self-sacrifice, moral purity, and selfless devotion to children and husband) [see Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia of American Literature]. This copy of "Jo's Boy's" has points associated with the first edition. There are matching dates on title page and verso. It contains 365 pages followed by 18 pages of publisher's advertisements for women's books, ending with Mrs. Ewing's "A Flatiron for a Farthing." Green floral design end papers. Brown cloth boards with leaf branch design extending diagonally from the lower spine and continued on the front board reaching to midpoint, almost centered. Lettering in bright gilt. Four leaf clover-like design just above the middle of the spine, in gilt, surrounded by red and black decorations. Glossy insert image from a bust by Walton Ricketson, sculptor, as frontispiece, with facsimile signature by the author. Intact tissue guard. The author preface reads "Concord, July 4, 1886." In this copy, page 15-16 is loose and is laid in place. The rest of the binding is tight. The rear board has several faint whitish spots. The spine heel and crown have wrinkles and small cloth losses. The outside rear board is cracked near the spine for 2/3rds of the length, extending from crown to just beyond midpoint. A previous owner has penciled two artistic young girls in what appear to be flapper dress and gaudy head wear. These drawings add charm and class to the otherwise fairly plain green floral end paper decorations and demonstrate that juvenile readers were very involved in Alcott's stories. There is considerable shelf wear to the rounded corners. Here is a chance to own this first edition book by a classic 19th century U.S. author ( a number of whose books have never been out of print) at a reasonable price. Check out this bookseller's offering of "Little Men," not a first edition, but in identical external format to this copy of "Jo's Boys." Nice companions for the bookshelf!. Seller Inventory # 004340

About this Item: Roberts Bros., Boston, 1886. Decorated Cloth. Condition: Good. Frontis (illustrator). First Edition / First State. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1886. First Edition, First State. Brown cloth decorated in black and gilt, 365 pp. + 1 blank + 18 pp. ads, last title mentioned in ads A Flatiron For a Farthing, 1 1/16" textblock, frontispiece, light green floral endpapers, matching dates on title and copyright page. Just Good, though bright (see scans); front hinge cracked, modest lean, small scale wear at spine ends and at corners, a bit of soiling, several spots of foxing at page fore-edge and at frontis tissue-guard, several leaves corner-torn, with minimal loss of text. See scans. Just Good, but lively and with all first-issue points. Alcott's latter-day update of the fortunes of former students at Jo's school for boys, Plumfield. Plenty soapy, and the characters have maintained their manitous though the [then] present day. Alcott's hopeful didacticism still abounds, as well. l50n. Seller Inventory # 000696
