Item Description: Paris: Edward W. Titus / Black Manikin Press, 1928. Hardback. First edition.. 148pp. Originally published by Wieland & Co., London in 1913. This 1928 edition consisting of sneets from the 1913 edition [The Great Beast; Rider& Co. 1951], to which Titus added a new title page, a 4 page catalogue of books from the Black Manikin Press, a 'Misprints' leaf tipped in facing page 148, plus twelve superb black and white copperplate engravings by Jean de Bosschère. There is also a slip tipped onto the half-title stating that "The quota of this edition apportioned to the United States of America sold by Random House, New York," possibly indicating that this copy was intended for sale in the USA. The edition limited to 800 numbered copies, this copy number 231. Bound in publisher's original suede style spine with title label to upper board in brown rough cloth boards. T.e.g., fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Tail of spine slightly bumped, spine rubbed, making spine title indistinct, else a near fine copy, which despite its limitation remains a scarce book. 8vo. Limited edition. Bookseller Inventory # 12176

Item Description: Edward W. Titus / Black Manikin Press, Paris, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. xii + 150pp. + 4pp. adverts. Felt spine & title label to upper board. Heavy brown cloth boards. T.e.g. Fore- & bottom edges uncut. 'Misprints' leaf tipped on facing p. (148). Edition limited to 800 numbered copies, this copy out-of-series (unnumbered). Crowley's translation of these wonderfully pithy pieces by Baudelaire. Crowley apparently had the sheets for the book printed by the Chiswick Press in 1913 with the intention of issuing it under the Wieland imprint, however for reasons unknown that edition was never published, and only one or two proof issues survive. The unbound sheets remained in storage until the 1920s, when Crowley had them transferred to Edward Titus of Paris. Titus added new preliminaries and advertisements, along with ten erotic black and white copperplate engravings by renowned decadent artist Jean de Bosschère, and published the work in the current format. Several different issues and binding variants exist, although no order of precedence has been established. This issue has a slip tipped onto the half-title announcing that "The quota of this edition apportioned to the United States of America sold by Random House, New York," presumably indicating that this was one of the copies intended for sale in the USA. Corners lightly bumped, spine lightly chafed as common, title label a little darkened, edges lightly rubbed, front endpapers a little browned, all else VG. (No dustwrapper - none issued).
