Little Prudy's Fairy book was first published in 1865. Sophie May, pseudonym for Rebecca Sophia Clarke (1833-1906), was an American author of children's fiction. Using her nieces and nephews as inspiration, she wrote realistic stories about children. Sophia authored 45 books between 1860 and 1903, the most popular being the Little Prudy books. After teaching for 10 years in Evansville, Indiana, Miss Clarke experienced severe hearing loss and returned to Norridgewock, Maine, the town of her birth, where she lived out the rest of her life with her sister Sarah Jones Clarke (pseud.
