Fox's classic Civil War tale was originally published by Scribner's Sons in 1903, with illustrations by F. C. Yohn. A handsomely illustrated copy, with the uncommon glassine jacket. Large octavo. Original japon-backed blue and yellow check cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, blue endpapers. With the glassine jacket. Housed in the blue box, japon label to lid, numbered in manuscript. Colour frontispiece, title page and 14 plates tipped in with tissue-guards. Contemporary Christmas ownership inscription to inside cover of box lid. An excellent copy, partly unopened, in the lightly yellowed glassine jacket with slight loss to foot of front flap, laid-in. In the lightly browned box, slight wear to extremities.
Condition: About fine. Signed limited edition, one of 500 numbered copies signed by Wyeth, a lovely copy. 11'' x 8.5''. Original quarter vellum, blue cloth boards. Top edge gilt. The glassine (dustjacket) shows a few chips to the corners and some small cracks or splits; the box shows cracking to three of the edges/corners, which have been lightly re-pasted at some time, with some light masking tape marks present, from an early repair, and a small abrasion across one edge of the box, from a removed piece of tape. The box is in good condition (showing the early repairs, noted above; the glassine wraparound (dustjacket) is very good. The book itself is an extremely fine copy, probably one of the finest that could be found today. A novel set in Kentucky during the Civil War era, with classic illustrations by N. C. Wyeth. The title of this novel lent its name to Kentucky's Kingdom Come State Park, in Cumberland. Weight: 4 lbs. Postage may be on this item. Signed by Illustrator(s).
