Item Description: Belknap & Bliss, Hartford, CT, 1871. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 432 pp, engravings, several pages of ads in back of book. Red-orange cloth boards decorated with black and gilt design and lettering, as is spine. The spine is a bit faded, but very readable. There is some wear to boards, and lower corners are soft from being bumped. Upper corners crisp. Wear, with some fraying at bottom of spine. Chocolate brown endpapers have owner's signature "Smith 1871" and a dealer has taped in a price tag (one of the most distracting flaws). Teh binding is tight, although some cracking beginning at front hinge. Some pages have a damp stain along the top edge, no musty smell. If not for the fading spine, would be a very nice copy. Item Description: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1835. First American Edition. The last work by the British essayist whose accomplishments are overshadowed by those of his wife, the feminist philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft, and his daughter, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. A delightful survey of mystical pretenders through the ages, the book was praised by Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote: "The design, if we understand it, is to display in their widest extent, the great range and wild extravagancy of the imagination of man. It is almost superfluous to say that in this he has fully succeeded. His compilation is an invaluable work, evincing much labor and research, and full of absorbing interest." Ownership signature (dated 1862) of John Howcutt (1795?-1882?), a Scot who emigrated to North America in 1835. Pages foxed but otherwise a very nicely preserved copy in original boards, with spine label intact. Bookseller Inventory # 18036

Item Description: L. Kabis and Company, Publishers, New York, 1892. Octavo, pp. [1-2] 3-6 vii-viii [9] 10-342 [343-344: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], flyleaves at front and rear, original light blue cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel stamped in gold, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in olive green. First edition. "One of the best examples of eccentric American fantastic fiction of the nineteenth century. Highly readable, and chock-full of sensational motifs: astrology, ghosts, personality exchange, cross-dressing, etc. The story begins in a small New Hampshire town, moves to New York City, then to Austria, then back to New Hampshire, where it ends on a note of disenchantment with occult matters, a highly unusual tone in such works, which are generally enthusiastic through and through." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1383. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 94. Bleiler (1978), p. 167. Reginald 12224. Wright (III) 4535. Touch of soiling to cloth on front panel, else a bright, near fine copy. The first printing is fairly uncommon. (#149507). Bookseller Inventory # 149507

Item Description: Frederick J. Mason,, London:, 1834. First edition.. Pagination: xx, 465, [1, errata]. Rebacked modern calf, decorative floral gilt design to spine, black title label, modern marbled boards, marbled edges, title page with a tiny dot of foxing at bottom, else text is clean and crisp, about fine copy. Lacks extra advertisement leaf at end, as do most copies. Included with book is original bookplate (freely inserted) of Robert Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe, Lord Houghton and The Earl of Crewe, British LIberal politician, statesman and writer (1858-1945). It is apparent The Earl of Crewe was a collector of the occult, as in research we have found other books of the sort with his bookplate in them. The opening sections discuss the various forms of augury and of contact with supernatural beings, followed by examples of magic and witchcraft from the Bible and from the classical periods of Greece and Rome. There follow sections on the Middle East, the European Dark Ages, which continue down through the alchemist. Each section features biographies of prominent magicians of that space or time. The concluding chapter is a lengthy history of witchcraft trials and of modern magicians including Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, Cardon, Nostradamus, Dr. Dee, and an account of witchcraft trials including sections on King James I's ideas on witchcraft, the Lancashire witches, Urbain Grandier, and the trials of witches in Sweden and New England. By William Godwin (1756-1836), the famous radical author, husband of the feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, father-in-law of Percy Bysshe Shelley, and father of the author of "Frankenstein," Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.
