About this Item: Cormorant Books, Dunvegan, ON, 1990. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 1st printing of the truly scarce Cormorant Books hardcover edition of the author's first book SIGNED by the author on the title page in black ink. This copy also bears a significant authorial inscription that reads "Thanks for helping to launch my career." The previous owner was a columnist for a now defunct literary journal called "Books in Canada" and reviewed the book in the year of publication. At that time, and for many years, the journal conferred the Books in Canada First Novel Award, and the award went to Ricci for Lives of the Saints in 1990. The book is bound in blue cloth with blue endpapers. This is a square and tight copy with sharp corners. The heel of the spine has softened. There are no internal markings, and the exposed page edges are clean. The jacket is bright, crisp, price intact and unaffected by sun damage. The jacket was made slightly too long for the book, which has led to a soft horizontal crease along the top edge of the front panel. The heel and crown of the spine of the jacket have softened and show some shelf wear. The top and bottom corners of the back flap are creased. The hardcover of this title would have been produced in an edition of perhaps a few hundred copies and most of the those would have gone to libraries. Lives of the Saints won the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction in Canada and the Books in Canada First Novel Award. In England it won the Betty Trask Award and Winifred Holtby Prize. It was a New York Times Notable Book and shortlisted for the L.A. Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. It was an Oeil de la Lettre Selection of the National Libraries Association of France. The novel has been published in seventeen countries and opens a trilogy of novels that includes In A Glass House and Where She Has Gone. An autographed Canadian first hardcover printing of Where She Has Gone is also available from this bookseller. Canadian buyers will be charged GST. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 002082

About this Item: Cormorant Books, Dunvegan, Ontario, 1990. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Maxwell Bates (illustrator). 1st Edition. 240pp (last leaf blank); gilt navy linen, jacket ($22.95 on lower flap); 222 x 145 x 22 mm (book); 225 x 147 x 23 mm (in jacket). Preferred issue of the author's award winning first book. A lovely copy in bright unworn jacket, save for soft corner creases at flap tips. All the more remarkable given that the jacket extends a full 5 mm above the crown. The extremely limited cloth issue remains notoriously scarce, most copies having presumably been absorbed by libraries. Seller Inventory # 003597
