About this Item: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1940. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Herriman, George (illustrator). First Edition. Marked "first edition" at bottom of publisher's page below "printed in the united states at the country life press garden city, n.y." with "cl" just above that. Green cloth boards with lightly sunned spine, looks like a faint and small water mark stain at upper edge of back board. Corners are all lightly bumped and slightly curled, little to no edgewear, upper page ends are colored and have a few water stains also. Book is uncommonly square, especially for as thick as it is. Contains three complete books, with contents and paginated as such: archy and mehitabel, archy s life of mahitabel and archy does his part. The entire book is in lower case and has no punctuation of course, as the author archy is a cockroach with the soul of a Vers Libre poet, and wrote by throwing himself on to the typewriter keys, head downward. Illustrated by George Herriman, the creator and illustrator of Krazy Kat. Don Marquis also created such characters as Freddy the Rat, Warty Bliggens the Toad and The Old Soak. Inside front cover has a review column glued to it and front end paper has previous owner's name and date of purchase in flourished cursive: Sept. 1, 1940. Front and back endpapers are tanned, text block itself is impressively clean only very very faint tanning to edges. Pages are rough-cut at side and bottom. Lovely volume, very charming story. Binding is very solid. Seller Inventory # 129288
