About this Item: William and Joseph Neal, Baltimore, 1836. Full Calf. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. Tucker (illustrator). New Edition. Being increasingly sought after and energetically applauded, the immortal lives of Plutarch, the most important work of Roman History, connecting Greek and Roman figures throughout time. In VERY GOOD condition, Binding being period, raised bands, six in total with illuminated gilt titling, somewhat bumped and rubbed. A couple stains but not detracting of overall charm. Marbled endsheets, and marbled edges! Also a very unique feature of this book, patterned gilt dental along the rims of boards, scarce thus. B/W frontispiece depicting Plutarch, and a following page illustration of Ceasar crossing the Rubicon, both engravings by Tucker. Pictures available upon request. Size: 8tvo. About this Item: Isaiah Thomas, Jr., Worcester, 1804. 6 volumes, 8vo. Six engraved frontispieces by Amos Doolittle. Contemporary speckled sheep, morocco lettering-pieces. Bindings rubbed and worn, three volumes lacking portions of spine; browning and some foxing, frontispieces offset onto titles. Provenance: Ezekiel Whitman (early signature on title of vol. 1 in ink; pencil note "E. Whitman's East Bridgewater" on frontispiece verso vol. 5). Whitman (1776-1866) was a Representative from Maine, born in East Bridgewater in 1776. He graduated Brown in 1795 and practiced law in New Gloucester and Portland, Maine. He was a delegate to the convention in 1819 that framed the first State constitution of Maine. The first American edition was published the previous year in Philadelphia. The editors and translators, the brothers Langhorne, published several of their own volumes of verse, but are best remembered for their translation of Plutarch. First Worcester edition, carefully corrected and the index much amended and accurately revised throughout. The First American edition had been published the preceding year in Philadelphia. Frontispieces engraved by Amos Doolittle, all dated June 1804. 6 vols. 8vo. The Langhorne brothers were both poets and published several volumes of their own works, but they are best remembered as the translators of "Plutarch's Lives." It was first published in 1770. Shaw and Shoemaker 7072-3 Contemporary sheep, maroon morocco labels. Joints cracked on several volumes, heads and tails of spines chipped, some light browning of text, in open end cases. With the signature of W. L. G. Peirce on endpapers Frontispieces engraved by Amos Doolittle, all dated June 1804. 6 vols. 8vo First Worcester edition, carefully corrected and the index much amended and accurately revised throughout. Boards further decorated with edge dentells in gilt. Minor edge wear to the boards. Volume I is missing a blank end paper before the title page. Previous owner's 19th century name and company on the front end papers of all volumes, with name also on the first few title pages. Occasional, infrequent age-toning and brown spotting. A generally bright, clean set, attractively bound in beautiful full tree calf. *** A scarce first American edition, scarcer still with the single publishing firm. Most editions list J. Hoff as a publisher with W.F.M'Laughlin. OCLC locates no copies without J. Hoff as an additional publisher. The previous owner's signature, of partners Curtis Noble and Isaac Hayes, early 19th century merchants of the firm Noble & Hayes, in Unadilla, Otsego County, N.Y. Isaac Hayes served as Town of Unadilla Supervisor for ten years, and Town Clerk for two years. He was also a member of the New York State Assembly for six years.
