About this Item: London: Printed at the University Press, Cambridge, and Published by Maggs Bros., 1929., 1929. Manual II (1889-1932) was the second son of Charles I of Portugal. He was king of his country from 1908 to 1910, when he was overthrown in a revolution. He and the Royal Family escaped to England, where they enjoyed their large fortune, and he developed a splendid library at his estate at Fullwell Park. His Majesty was assisted in the production of this work by printer Walter Lewis, type designer Stanley Morison, and Emery Walker Ltd., who produced the fine plates. Three volumes, large quarto. lviiii], 633, [1]; [xii], 817, [1]; [xlii], 791, [1] pp. With 22 facsimile plates, many printed in colors, and 474 other illustrations, many printed in black and red, depicting woodcuts, colophons, initial letters, printerÕs marks, etc. Full salmon-tan linen buckram with gilt spines. Portuguese arms stamped in gilt on front covers. Spines lightly faded, small nick in spine of Volume III. A very good set. One of 650 copies. First edition of this monumental study of early Portuguese books. It was the first comprehensive survey of Portuguese book decoration, woodcuts, and typography in the fifteenth and sixteenth century and remains an indispensable reference for books of that period. It includes many important books printed in Portugal in Spanish and others printed outside Portugal. There are a number of unique items, fully described here for the first time.
