Item Description: T. Fisher Unwin, London, England, 1891. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good+. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and was possibly issued without a dust jacket. The book has been restitched, but is in its original binding. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The red cloth covers have noticeable ground-in dirt, especially to the spine. There are several spots of dirt and rubbing to the covers as well. The text pages are clean and bright. Both front and rear endpapers have been repaired professionally. The endpapers have noticeable ground-in dirt and finger marks. This book is part of "The Adventure Series". "Verney Lovett Cameron (1 July 1844 24 March 1894) was an English traveller in Central Africa and the first European to cross (1875) equatorial Africa from sea to sea.,The remainder of Cameron's life was chiefly devoted to projects for the commercial development of Africa, and to editing and writing. His last work was the editing of the personal adventure narrative of the Master Mariner James Choyce, who had sailed as a teenager in 1797 aboard a whaler to the Pacific Ocean. Choyce's narrative covering 26 years of seafaring life is one of the earliest works of an Englishman's experiences in South America." "Of the truth of Choyce's narrative there can be no manner of doubt. Of course there must be some small allowance made for the fact of his having written his memoirs in a consecutive form after he had given up the sea; and considering the many adventures he experienced and the various hardships he endured, the notes which he was able to preserve must have been extremely scanty, though his memory was, as is porved by the accuracy of his description of his various routes in France, very exact and retentive." According to Comm. Cameron, both James Choyce and Captain O'Brien were captured by the forces of Napoleon and imprisoned. Both men escaped and managed to return to English vessels. James Choyce was a seaman and whaler who traveled more than once around the coast of South America. He includes some description of the Gallapagos islands in his narrative. Item Description: FIRST EDITION, 1891. Xv + 379 pp., guarded frontis., + 7 other ills. Contemporary half-calf ; maroon calf title-piece to spine ; richly tooled panels ; raised bands ; marbled boards, e.p's & all edges. 21 x 14cm. Head of front joint starting ; extremities of binding rubbed o/w V.G. Bookplate of Chesterfield House. (A Palladian London townhouse built between 1747 and 1752 for the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, on land owned by Lord Howe. The house was due for demolition in 1869 but was bought by Charles Magniac, a city merchant). There is an ALS tipped in (1946) in which the writer gifts the book to a colleague with whom he has spent 21 years in the RNLI. He states that he bought the book from a Birmingham bookshop. He also mentions the Mayfair bookplate and refers to the great library at Chesterfield House : 'The library is very much the same as when built about two hundred years ago in 1750.' First published here in 1891, a second edition appeared in 1905 to coincide with the interest in all things naval during the first Nelson Centenary. This book contains two dramatic accounts of British sailors captured during the Napoleonic Wars. The first concerns James Choyce, an English Master Mariner and whaler, captured by the Spanish in South American waters ; he made a number of remarkable escapes and was eventually sent on board the English frigate MELAMPUS but deserted her and after further amazing adventures reached England. Back at sea in the whaler DIANA, Choyce was captured once again, this time by a French privateer, and marched through France to Verdun. He describes his prison life and his later voyages at sea. The second part of the book is perhaps better known and no less exciting. It was first published in 1811 and tells the story of Captain O'Brien, R.N., who was also unfortunate enough to be taken by the French. Captured after being shipwrecked, he too was sent to the infamous Verdun Goal in chains from where he eventually made good his escape and reached the safety of Collingwood's ships in the Adriatic.
