One of 525 copies of which this is number 369, signed by Willy Pogany, illustrator and designer. The text by Rolleston was adapted from Richard Wagner's opera of the same name which was derived from the Arthurian Legends of Lohengrin, son of Parzival (percival), A knight of the Holy Grail - which itself draws on the medieval tales of the Swan Knight, a mysterious rescuer who appears in a boat drawn by Swans. Pogany's edition is lavishly decorated in a manuscript style, with decorated initials, copious colour and black/white illustrations throughout with 8 tipped in colour plates. This is a particularly scarce copy, bounding in fetching, leather-esque blue crushed cloth. With gilt titling and design to cover. Top edge gilt. Fore edge uncut. Printed on thick grey paper. About this Item: Harrap, 1913. Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine Publisher's Box. Willy Pogany (illustrator). First Trade Edition. POGANY, WILLY (Illustrator). THE TALE OF LOHENGRIN: Knight of the Swan. Adapted from the work of Richard Wagner as interpreted by T.W. Rolleston. London: Harrap, [no date, but 1913]. First Trade Edition. 4to. Stunning FINE copy in super ornate original publisher's brown cloth, gilt. Still housed in its original publisher's pictorial slipcase with original paper label. Large and impressive volume which, having been protected by the box, looks almost new. There is just a tiny bit of abrasion to one little spot on the lower cover, hardly worth mentioning. One of Pogany's greatest accomplishments with every element of the book design done to his visionary standards. There are 8 tipped-in color plates, many astonishing full page black & white lithographs, loads of other original design details, all printed to remarkable effect on heavy gray paper. Both the paper used for the text and the paper used for the slipcase are exceeding prone to wear; this is just a superlative example. Seller Inventory # 001475

Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A fine copy. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase.William Andrew ("Willy") Pogany (born Vilmos Andreas Pogány) (August 1882 - 30 July 1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of children's and other books. Pogany's best known works consist of illustrations of classic myths and legends done in the Art Nouveau style. He also worked as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. The publication of Pogány's Lohengrin was the final act in his trilogy of masterworks focused on Wagner's Germanic tales, and one of the quintet that is considered his finest work. Pogány clearly approached the commission to illustrate Lohengrin as an opportunity to improve and extend techniques that he had developed through his preceding work, particularly The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Tannhäuser and Parsifal, the other four books that immortalized his career as an illustrator. That commitment to ongoing innovation resulted in an incredible suite of illustrations, including color lithographs, monotone and marginal illustrations and the delightful tipped-in color plates (produced with a four-color process) included in Lohengrin. Themes of medieval chivalry, erotic love and moral tests are illustrated in a lavish fashion by Pogány with an outstanding use of iconography, form and color. Seller Inventory # 03377
