Item Description: Paris: The Olympia Press, 1957. Soft Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Limited edition of 5,000 numbered copies. Publisher's yellow paper wrappers, blue title panels to the front wrapper and spine, lettered in black and yellow. About near fine, with some light rubbing to the extremities, a hint of toning to the spine, minor soiling to the wrappers, else fine. A clean and pleasing example of a scarce title. L'Affaire Lolita is a pamphlet regarding the publication and censorship of Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 novel Lolita, which tells the story of Humbert Humbert, a professor of literature with a penchant for pre-teen "nymphets." Despite the fact that it was originally published in Paris by the Olympia Press, Lolita was banned in France in 1955; at the behest of the British government, who had also banned the novel, the French authorities seized twenty-five of the Olympia Press' works, including Lolita. Shortly thereafter, Maurice Girodias, founder of the press, dubbed the controversy "l'affaire Lolita" in reference to the 1890s Dreyfus Affair and what the French press had dubbed "l'affaire Miller" when Tropic of Cancer was banned several years prior. Girodias published this pamphlet in order to garner support for his protest of the ban - a lawsuit which he ultimately won. Specifically, this volume includes Girodias' article "L'affaire Lolita," an essay by Nabokov, selections from Lolita, and selected other essays, all of which are printed in French. Item Description: Olympia Press, 1955. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 2 vols., pp. 188 and 223. Original green stiff paper wrappers, lettered in black. Printed price of 900 Francs to rear panel of both volumes. Vol. I: 1cm chip to foot of front panel at spine, some wear to spine edges and ends, small pencilled marking to rear panel, about very good. Vol. II: Some wear to spine edges and ends, small closed tear to rear panel at top of spine, a little bumped and rubbed, about very good. First edition, first issue, with the original printed price of 900 Francs to the rear panel of both volumes. Lolita, one of the towering literary achievements of the twentieth century and Nabokov's best-known masterpiece, was turned down by every major American publishing house. It eventually found a home in Paris with Maurice Girodias's Olympia Press, an imprint far better known for low sleaze than high art. Nabokov was appalled by the company his book was forced to keep on the Olympia list, and he and Girodias conducted a bitter, litigious feud lasting years. During that time Lolita's reputation grew in direct inverse proportion to its availability. The novel was banned in the UK shortly after publication; the French authorities followed suit at the end of 1956. Lolita finally found an American publisher in 1958, whereupon a newspaper asked the great and the good for their opinions. Groucho Marx declared he wasn't going to read it for six years, until Lolita was eighteen. This Lolita is showing her age a little, and the chip to the front panel of Volume I either makes this set less desirable or more affordable, depending on your attitude to condition. The set conforms exactly to the bibliographical citation in Kearney (1.13.1) with the exception of the presence of a rear blank endpaper in Volume I which is not called for. It's possible that this is a variant, more likely that the endpaper was simply missed during collation. An expensive chip -- fine copies of this title command more than twice the price of this one -- but still a very good set. Kearney: 1.13. Bookseller Inventory # 1878
