Hardcover. First Canadian edition. This is the Canadian first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. Both U.S. and Canadian editions were published in June 1900. The Canadian is the scarcest of the three English-language first editions. This Canadian edition was bound in tan cloth with an illustrated front cover like its British counterpart, and is easily distinguishable by a red fleur-de-lis on the spine, thinner binding, and black title and author print. The attractive binding is prone to both hinge breaks and severe spine toning. Here is a respectable and sound ex-library copy. The binding is clean, tight, and square, with only modest shelf wear to extremities and mild spine toning. Nonetheless, there is a whitish rectangle below the author's name on the spine, ostensibly from removal of a library label, library number stamps on both pastedowns, the half title, and the title page, scarring from library pocket removal on the rear pastedown and facing final free endpaper verso, and the front free endpaper has been excised, only the stub remaining. A previous owner name and date of "Xmas 1901" is written in pencil on the lower half title recto. Apart from the ex-library marks, the contents are notably clean, with no spotting, intact maps, and modest soiling and toning confined to the page edges.London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an itinerant, adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring and dramatic escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career.London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham. Churchill had lost the Oldham by-election his first attempt at Parliament in July 1899. Since then, as Arthur Balfour (who became Prime Minister in 1902) put it in a 30 August 1900 letter, the young Churchill had had "fresh opportunities - admirably taken advantage of for shewing the public of what stuff you are made." Indeed; Churchill won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election".Reference: Cohen A4.3.a, Woods/ICS A4(bb), Langworth p.56.

Hardcover. First edition, first printing. This is a first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. The British first edition is striking, bound in tan cloth with an illustration of an armoured train on the front cover accompanied by the author's facsimile signature and with the Union flag and Transvaal flag in gilt on the spine beneath a red subtitle. The binding is visually arresting, but the first edition proved notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. Truly fine copies are virtually a chimera. This first edition, first printing is a sound and complete survivor, but nonetheless only in good condition, showing both its age and the various depredations to which the edition proved susceptible. The striking illustrated binding is tight, though soiled and stained, spine toned, showing some wear to hinges and extremities, and with a pronounced forward lean. The contents show typical spotting, heaviest to the prelims, intermittent throughout. We find no previous ownership marks. The original black endpapers are intact with no sign of cracking at the gutters. All maps and plans are present, with the folding maps at the title page and p.366 fully intact. The contents are bound with the early issue of the original publisher's catalogue dated "10/99". All maps and plans are present, with the folding maps at the title page and p.366 fully intact.London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. Hardcover. First edition, second printing. This is a scarce variant binding of the first edition, second and final printing of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa, where his capture, captivity, and daring escape made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. The British first edition is striking, with an illustration of an armoured train on the front cover accompanied by the author's facsimile signature and with the Union flag and Transvaal flag in gilt on the spine beneath a red subtitle. The second and final printing of the first edition came just two weeks after the first printing. The two printings have virtually identical appearance and content, the only readily discernible difference being the words "NEW IMPRESSION" on the title page. Not so identical is the scarce variant binding of the second printing, which instead of the typical light tan cloth features a distinctly darker medium brown cloth. We have seen only a handful of these variant bindings. Here is one. Moreover, this copy presents a further bibliographic curiosity. Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald Cohen, makes note of the variant binding, but specifies that "The endpapers are white wove unwatermarked paper". We have previously encountered two copies with brown endpapers. This is the first variant binding copy we have encountered with original black endpapers, identical to those of the first printing. Condition of this second and final printing variant binding is very good. The binding is tight with no appreciable spine toning and only modest wear to extremities and only light overall soiling. Shelf presentation is particularly impressive for the edition, rendered so not only by the variant binding, but also by condition. The contents retain a crisp feel, mildly age-toned. A single previous owner name is inked to the upper recto of the second blank endpaper. The original black endpapers are intact and all maps and plans are present, as are the folding maps at the title page and p.366. Spotting is modest for the edition, notable only at the prelims and page edges, which also show some age-toning and dust soiling to the top edge.In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Since then, as Arthur Balfour (who became Prime Minister in 1902) put it in a 30 August 1900 letter, the young Churchill had had "fresh opportunities - admirably taken advantage of for shewing the public of what stuff you are made." Indeed; Churchill won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election".Reference: Cohen A4.1.c, Woods/ICS A4(a.2), Langworth p.53.

Hardcover. First U.S. edition, only printing. This is a quite respectable copy of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The American edition offered here is both distinctly different in appearance and more scarce than its British first edition counterpart. The U.S. first edition saw just a single printing of which no more than an estimated 1,850 copies were sold. As opposed to the illustrated khaki cloth of the British first edition, this U.S. edition is bound in pebble grain red cloth that proved quite susceptible to blotchy wear and soiling, particularly on the spine. This is an atypically bright and respectable copy in very good condition. The binding is square, clean, and tight with mild superficial scuffing and light wear to extremities, but is nonetheless quite bright for the edition, with no discernible color shift between the covers and spine and quite good shelf presentation for the edition. The contents are notably bright with no previous ownership marks. All maps and plans are intact, including the folding maps, which remain properly folded. The top edge gilt is bright. Trivial spotting is confined to the fore and bottom edges. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.2, Woods/ICS A4(b), Langworth p.55.

Hardcover. First edition, first printing. This is the first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. This first edition, first printing is in good plus condition, original, complete, sound, unrestored with notably clean contents. The binding remains square and tight, the illustrated front cover quite presentable, the gilt and red subtitle print still clearly legible on the only lightly toned spine. We note general wear to extremities, modest overall soiling, some small stains to the blank rear cover, and some fraying along the joints. Shelf presentation is quite decent for the edition. The contents are not only bright, but retain a crisp feel, with minimal spotting confined to the prelims and page edges. The original black endpapers are intact with no sign of cracking at the gutters. All maps and plans are present, with the folding maps at the title page and p.366 fully intact. The contents are bound with the early issue of the original publisher's catalogue dated "10/99". The sole previous ownership mark is contemporary, five weeks after publication: a brief gift inscription and date of "June 23 1900" inked on the upper recto of the blank preceding the half title. [Travel/History] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.xiv, 498 [2], and 32-page publisher's catalogue. Illustrated with folding coloured map, 3 further maps, 4 plans. In publisher's tan cloth with gilt and red titles to spine, black and red titles to upper board, and a black stamped illustration of an armoured troop train, black endpapers. No inscriptions, some light spotting within, slight lean to text block, covers show a little use and soiling. Very good. Winston Churchill's personal account of the first five months of the Boer War, which includes impressions on the Relief of Ladysmith, and also the story of WSC's capture, and dramatic escape from the Boers. He was captured while a military reporter, but fled his prison camp and travelled almost 300 miles to Portuguese Lourenço Marques in Delagoa Bay, with the assistance of an English mine manager. His escape made him a minor national hero for a time in Britain, though instead of returning home, he rejoined General Buller's army on its march to relieve the British at the Siege of Ladysmith and take Pretoria. He was one of the first British troops through, and in fact, alongside his cousin the Duke of Marlborough, was able to get ahead on horseback to demand and receive the surrender of 52 Boer guards from the prison camp.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The first of two Boer War volumes derived from young Winston's newspaper despatches as a war correspondent in South Africa, featuring a thrilling account of his escape from a Boer prison, an escape that helped launch his political career. This is a very good copy of the First English edition. The cloth has darkened significantly, particularly along the spine, which is unfrayed, but a bit undulated. The binding is firm, if just a touch cocked, and the corners are turned. The contents are fine and unfoxed, with all maps present. Overall, a very healthy survivor that does show its age but is in better shape than most. 8vo (516 pages with 3 folding maps, 5 other plans and maps, 32-page rear publisher?s catalogue.) (Cohen A4.1.a) (Woods A4a).

Hardcover. First Canadian edition. This is a collector-worthy Canadian first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. Both U.S. and Canadian editions were published in June 1900. Here is a superior example, in better than very good plus condition. The binding remains tight and square, with sharp corners. There is almost no reportable wear, with only trivial wrinkling at the spine ends. We would grade this copy as near fine with no qualifiers were it not for some of the customary spine toning endemic to this edition. Nonetheless, shelf presentation is quite respectable, the spine color even and the red fleur-de-lis still clearly legible. The contents are likewise in superior condition. We find no spotting and modest age-toning shows appreciably only on the page edges. There are three previous ownership marks: an attractive illustrated bookplate affixed to the front pastedown; an inked name on the upper front free endpaper recto; and a third name and date of "1900 June" - presumably that of the original owner inked on the upper title page. The ink of this original owner's name has spread with time.London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa.
