Item Description: Wildside Press Mrz 2007, 2007. Buch. Book Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'This small book is mainly a personal record of my adventures and impressions during the first five months of the African War. It may also be found to give a tolerably coherent account of the operations conducted by Sir Redvers Buller for the Relief of Ladysmith. The correspondence of which it is mainly composed appeared in the columns of the Morning Post newspaper, and I propose, if I am not interrupted by the accidents of war, to continue the series of letters. The stir and tumult of a camp do not favour calm or sustained thought, and whatever is written herein must be regarded simply as the immediate effect produced by men powerfully moved, and scenes swiftly changing upon what I hope is a truth-seeking mind.' -- Winston S. Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers and made a daring escape that made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. The book was published in May 1900, and in October Churchill won his first seat in Parliament. The first edition is a beautiful book with a distinctive, pictorial front cover, but is notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. This first edition, first printing copy is only in about good condition - structurally sound, but flawed, not particularly pretty, and priced accordingly. The illustrated khaki cloth binding is square and tight, but soiled and stained with wear to extremities and wrinkling to the spine cloth. The contents are unusually bright and the original black endpapers are present, as are all maps and plans, including the folding map at the title page. A single previous owner name dated "June 1901" is inked on the ffep. Spotting is very light, only occasionally within and not apparent on the page edges. The significant flaws of this copy are the following: loss of a 2.5 x 2.5 inch portion of the endpaper at the upper left front pastedown, gutter splits at the endpapers (cosmetic only, with the mull beneath intact), and loss of an irregular 2 inch strip at the bottom of the title page. Fortunately, we can still definitively conclude that this copy is first printing. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.1.a, Woods/ICS A4(a.1), Langworth p.53. Bookseller Inventory # 002261

Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., New York, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very good. 1st Edition. First American edition, only printing. Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers and made a daring escape that made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. The American edition is more scarce than the British, with just 3,000 copies issued. The pebble grain red cloth of this edition proved durable, but susceptible to blotchy wear, particularly on the spine. This copy is very good, but with some flaws. The covers are bright and clean with square corners and bright gilt. The spine is lightly faded, but retains bright gilt and shows little wear. The contents are clean and tight with all maps and plans present and properly folded. The top edge gilt remains bright. There is a gift inscription lightly penciled on the ffep, a small ink stamped owner name on the title page, and the half title is wrinkled, having once been folded. The significant flaw is evidence of a previous moisture exposure that has left the lower half of the text block adjacent the spine very slightly wrinkled. It is not obtrusive and one must look carefully for the outline of the moisture exposure, which can be easily detected only from the front pastedown through p.20. The rear board shows a very faint moisture line but there is none visible on the front cover. Nonetheless, it is a significant flaw, which means this otherwise very good copy is priced low. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers and made a daring escape that made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good plus. First edition, second printing. This is the first edition, second printing of Churchill's fourth book - the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers. Churchill's daring escape made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill was first elected to Parliament the same year his two Boer War books - London to Ladysmith via Pretoria and Ian Hamilton's March - were published. The second printing of the first edition came just two weeks after the first printing. The two printings have identical bindings. The only readily discernible difference is the words "NEW IMPRESSION" on the title page. This edition is a beautiful book, but notoriously prone to wear, soiling, and toning of the binding and spotting of the contents. Here is a good plus copy of the first edition, second printing - sound and unrestored with superior contents, but with typical external soiling and a modest wear. The pictorial cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners, but shows soiling and light scuffing to the covers. The spine retains clearly legible gilt and red subtitle, but shows a slight moisture stain to the lower spine, some wear at the spine ends, and an abrasion to the cloth to the right of the flags. The contents are bright with spotting confined to the first few several leaves (up to page 7) and the page edges. All maps and plans present and properly folded, including the folding color map at the title page. The original black endpapers are intact. We find no previous ownership marks. Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., New York, 1900. Hardcover. First edition, only printing. This is the U.S. first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The American edition offered here is more scarce than the British, with a single printing of just 3,000 copies issued. This edition is bound in pebble grain red cloth that proved quite susceptible to blotchy wear and soiling, particularly on the spine. Here is a sound, good plus copy with good shelf presentation and contents, marred only by aesthetic flaws to the covers and a missing map. The binding is square and tight, with strong red spine color and bright gilt. What leads us to grade this copy as only good plus is a slight indentation and moisture stain on the lower third of the front cover and a larger, though faint, moisture stain on the rear cover. There is only minor wear to extremities, apart from a bit of fraying to the upper rear corner. The contents are bright. The folding map that is supposed to be tipped in at the title page is missing. Previous ownership marks are a partially erased name and the date "1900" in pencil on the first free endpaper and the embossed name of a Denver bookseller on the bottom of the title page. Very light spotting appears confined to the rear pastedown and fore edge. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.2, Woods/ICS A4(b), Langworth p.55. Bookseller Inventory # 003134

Item Description: Longmans, Green, & Co., London, 1900. Hardcover. First edition, first printing. This is the British first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The British first edition is striking, bound in tan cloth with an illustration of an armoured train on the front cover accompanied by the author's facsimile signature and with the Union flag and Transvaal flag in gilt on the spine beneath a red subtitle. The binding is visually arresting, but the first edition proved notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. This first edition, first printing copy is in good condition overall. The binding retains a fairly clean illustrated front cover and there is no color shift to the spine, which retains bright gilt and red subtitle. We do note a forward lean to the binding, wrinkling and some mottling to the spine cloth, and wear to the hinges and corners. The contents are respectably bright with the original black endpapers and the folding maps intact. The folding map at p. 448 shows some wear to the edge, likely due to a previous misfold which left the edge protruding from the text block, but which has since been corrected. The sole previous ownership mark is the unobtrusive embossed stamp of a London bookseller ("W. H. Smith & Son") on the upper first free endpaper. Modest spotting is primarily confined to the page edges and endsheets. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.1.a, Woods/ICS A4(a.1), Langworth p.53. Bookseller Inventory # 003026

Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. This one relates the exciting story of his capture by the Boers and the subsequent daring escape that made him a celebrity. The first edition is a beautiful book, but notoriously fragile and prone to wear. This first edition, first printing copy is in good condition. The pictorial front cover shows soiling, particularly at the edges. Soiling and staining on the rear cover is heavier. The spine gilt and red lettering are still clearly visible, but there is a slight vertical dimple, as well as wrinkling and soiling at the spine ends. The contents are clean and tight with no inscriptions. Light spotting is confined to text block edges with no spotting present internally. Moreover, the original black endpapers are intact, as are all maps and plans. However, the top corner of the ffep is cut away. The edge of the first folding map and the folding map at page 448 are both frayed from being misfolded and slightly protruding from the text block and the contents are slightly age toned. A respectable and sound copy, even if far from fine. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.1.a, Woods/ICS A4(a.1), Langworth p.53. Bookseller Inventory # 001051

Item Description: London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. 'New Impression' (published in the same format and year as the first). Illustrated with folding coloured map, 3 further folding maps, 4 plans, pp. (xiv), 498, 2 of adverts, 32-page of publisher's catalogue. Publisher's pictorial beige cloth, coated black endpapers. Ownership inscription and armorial bookplate of John Sharpe. A very good copy with some acceptable age-related handling and toning, some wear to inside paper joints but no major defects. Winston Churchill's personal account of the first five months of the Boer War, which includes impressions on the Relief of Ladysmith, and also the story of WSC's capture, and dramatic escape from the Boers; He was captured while a military reporter, but fled his prison camp and travelled almost 300 miles to Portuguese Lourenço Marques in Delagoa Bay, with the assistance of an English mine manager. His escape made him a minor national hero for a time in Britain, though instead of returning home, he rejoined General Buller's army on its march to relieve the British at the Siege of Ladysmith and take Pretoria. He was one of the first British troops through, and in fact, alongside his cousin the Duke of Marlborough, was able to get ahead on horseback to demand and receive the surrender of 52 Boer guards from the prison camp. Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., New York, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very good. 1st Edition. This is the U.S. first edition of Churchill's fourth book - the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers and made a daring escape that made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill was first elected to Parliament the same year his two Boer War books - London to Ladysmith via Pretoria and Ian Hamilton's March - were published. The American edition offered here is more scarce than the British, with a single printing of just 3,000 copies issued. The pebble grain red cloth of this edition proved durable, but susceptible to blotchy wear and discoloration, particularly on the spine. This copy is in very good condition The binding remains square and tight. Minor wear is primarily confined to the corners and spine ends, with a trivial hint of fraying to the upper rear hinge. The spine is darkened, with dulled gilt and a barely discernable faint dark stain to the upper third, but remains nicely rounded and uniform in tone. The contents remain clean and bright with no previous owner inscriptions or bookplates. All maps and plans are intact and properly folded with no tears or wear. The top edge gilt remains bright. The fore and bottom edges show modest age-toning, but no soiling or spotting. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.2, Woods/ICS A4(b), Langworth p.55. Bookseller Inventory # 002333

Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Co., New York, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near fine. 1st Edition. This is Churchill's fourth book and the first of his two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. It was during this conflict that Churchill was captured by the Boers and made a daring escape that made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. The American edition offered here is more scarce than the British, with a single printing of just 3,000 copies issued. The pebble grain red cloth of this edition proved durable, but susceptible to blotchy wear and discoloration, particularly on the spine. This copy is a superior, collector worthy example. The binding is tight and square, retaining a nicely rounded spine. The covers are clean with vivid color, square corners, and bright gilt. The spine is slightly darkened and the gilt slightly dulled, but spine presentation is nonetheless much better than normal. Very light wear is substantially confined to the spine ends and front hinge. The contents are clean and tight with all maps and plans present and intact. No spotting. No previous ownership markings of any kind. The top edge gilt remains bright. Minor age toning at the page edges. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.2, Woods/ICS A4(b), Langworth p.55.
