Item Description: Harper & Brothers, Franklin Square, New York, 1890. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Doré, Gustave (illustrator). First Edition. First and only American Edition from Harper & Brothers. Large, 11" x 13 1/4" folio, gift-book design. Dk. green cloth boards, gilt cover titles and design, some shelf, spine wear, chip, bump, 1" dent at bk. brd. Page generally very good; few at front w/small upper corner chip, some fox, wear, antiquarian plate at endpapers. Gilt page edges. Bind good, intact. Contains 180 charming illustrations by Doré. Fifty-four of which are full-page with 126 vignettes placed at the turn of every page. Dore and Jererold depict Victorian London as a paradise for the rich and hell for the poor living in a world of warehouses, gangways, railway viaducts, breweries and underground stations. An enlightening work conceived in 1868 by Blanchard Jerrold that brings to life the chaotic and gloomy past of a great city on the cusp of modern times. Rare, solid complete example. Accompanied by the famous artist Gustave Doré, Jerrold prowled every corner of the heaving metropolis, sometimes with plain-clothes police for protection. Doré often went in disguise to parts of London's underground seeking out the material immortalized in this volume. A forgotten classic of social journalism, and a frankly brutal look at the poverty stricken, gin-swilling London of the nineteenth century. Written by Jerrold in a boldly perceptive and gripping style. Blanchard Jerrold (1826-1884) was both journalist and playwright, with 'Cool as a Cucumber' the most successful of his plays. He was also editor of 'Lloyd's Weekly News'. Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was an amazingly gifted artist and among his many works are illustrated editions of 'Paradise Lost', 'Dante's Inferno', the Bible and 'The Idylls of the Kings'. According to Dan Malan, Doré biographer of 'Adrift on Dreams of Splendor,' the engravings in this collection are "often hailed as the greatest visual expression of class struggle ever published." 191 pages. Insured post. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 019160

Item Description: Grant & Co., London, 1872. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good with no dust jacket. First Edition. B&W Illustrations; Jerrold was an English journalist and author. , Gustave Dore - "Paul" Gustave Doré was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving. Width: 12.25" Height: 15.25", 18lbs. Gilt edges. Deluxe binding. "London: A Pilgrimage," with 180 engravings, was published in 1872. It enjoyed commercial and popular success, but the work was disliked by many contemporary critics. Some of these critics were concerned with the fact that Dore appeared to focus on the poverty that existed in parts of London. Dore was accused by The Art Journal of "inventing rather than copying." "The Westminster Review" claimed that "Dore gives us sketches in which the commonest, the vulgarest external features are set down." The book was a financial success, however, and Dore received commissions from other British publishers. Bound in full red leather, with gilt decoration on the covers and spine. Gilt lettering is stamped on two black spine labels. The exteriors exhibit rubbing and edge wear. Full red leather [morocco]. The text blocks are adorned with gilt edges and marbled endpapers. The front board of the second volume is almost detached. The binding of the first volume is sound. The pages exhibit mild aging and scattered faint smudging. This work is richly illustrated by Dore. 180 ill. Woodcuts. 126 vignettes in the text. His night scenes on the Thames, the people, the teeming Docks and some strange streets are the most impressive. "Dore’s devastating realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes London one of the great illustrated books of the world. " Ray. ; 18. Bookseller Inventory # 37359

Item Description: Grant & Co. 1872, 1872. Folio (12.5 x 15 ins, 315 x 385mm) nicely bound in later dark red three quarters morocco, backstrip with raised bands, gilt. Pictorial title-page (a little dusty), 53 wood-engraved plates, many text-illustrations, text within red ruled borders. Minimal occasional foxing, as usual. Overall a very good copy of the First Edition. "London is all too charged with misery (comprehending) whole townships of the almost hopeless poor. Step.out of the glittering halls of Parliament into the Alsatia that lies a shame and a scandal behind Westminster Abbey." Dore's unforgetable illustrations, so important in fixing in our minds the images of Ninteenth Century London, and inspiration to films and adaptations of Victorian novels. "Well printed on fine paper with large margins. Implicit throughout Dore's designs is the devastating contrast between the rich and poor.memorable plates record the appalling yet picturesque lives of the working or submerged classes." Ray, French, 251. Jerrold was an "intimate co-worker" with Dore, who he met on one of his frequent long stays in Paris. "In politics he was an ardent liberal, strenuously advocating the interests of the working classes." DNB. Bookseller Inventory # 3282

Item Description: Grant & Co, London, 1872. First Edition. Folio. 191pp., illustrated with magnificent illustrations by Dore whose marvelous depictions of the squalid metropolis and showing an underside described in part by Dickens and written both by Octavia Hill and General Booth were here made bold by the large size engravings with details that later reprints unfortunately had to reduce ending the boldness of his pen, rebacked and re-cornered in brown leather over original maroon cloth, raised bands with lettering gilt, marbled endpapers and all edges marbled, occasional scattered foxing but mostly clean. A very good copy of this scarce edition. - McLean, Victorian Book Design; Garvery; Muir, Victorian Illustrated Books pp. 225-22. Bookseller Inventory # 014701

Item Description: London: Grant & Co., 1872. Folio, original brown gilt-stamped and lettered morocco, backstrip richly gilt. [xiv], xii, 191 pp. Wood-engraved half-title, frontispiece, & 52 full-page plates, each with captioned tissue guard; and 146 wood-engraved text illustrations and pictorial initials. An ex-library copy, with white tipp-ex on the backstrip and two library bookplates in the front pastedown. First English edition of this great work, preceding the first French edition (with its briefer, less informed text) by four years. This copy is in the deluxe presentation publisher's binding, exceptionally rare thus. The book was conceived in 1868 by Jerrold, an experienced journalist; and author and artist prowled every corner of the metropolis, sometimes accompanied by plainclothes police. . "The theme of this book had been anticipated by Matthew Arnold three years earlier when he wrote of 'London, with its unutterable external hideousness, and with its internal canker of publicé egestas, privatim opulentia - to use the words which Sallust puts into Cato's mouth about Rome, -unequaled in the world' (Culture and Anarchy, London, 1869, p. 31). Doré's devastating realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes London one of the great illustrated books of the world. The English edition antedates the French by four years (and has 6 more plates), and indeed it is a handsomer book, except for the few copies of the French edition printed on papier de Chine." - Ray. "If one book depicts Dickens' London in all its glory and especially misery, this is it; and it is hard to cite another book of any period which so perfectly defines a time and place in history as this book does." Bland, A History of Book Illustration, pp. 289-90. Ray, Art of the French Illustrated Book, 251. Illustrator and the Book in England 297. Artist and the Book 86.
