Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929. First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original dark blue cloth. Signed and dated by Thomas Wolfe in 1937 on the front free endpaper. Light rubbing, near fine in the rare original dust jacket which has some professional restoration. American novelist, Thomas Wolfe "made it possible to believe that the stuff of life, with all its awe and mystery and magic, could by some strange alchemy be transmuted to the page" (William Gay). "Look Homeward, Angel is one of the most important novels of my life. . . . It's a wonderful story for any young person burning with literary ambition, but it also speaks to the longings of our whole lives; I'm still moved by Wolfe's ability to convey the human appetite for understanding and experience" (Elizabeth Kostova). Item Description: New York: Scribner's, 1929. First Edition. First edition of Wolfe's rhapsodic first novel, one of the most lyrical and passionate evocations of coming of age in American literature. An excellent association copy, INSCRIBED by Wolfe to Elaine (Westall Gould) and Harold (Gould), "For Elaine and Harold with friendship and love always, and with especial thanks because they have been among the best friends this book has had. Tom Wolfe. Jan 25, 1930." Elaine Westall was Wolfe's cousin, and the author of an insightful analytical memoir, LOOK BEHIND YOU, THOMAS WOLFE: GHOSTS OF A COMMON TRIBAL HERITAGE (Hicksville: Exposition Press, 1976). Her parents and other members of the family were models for Wolfe's characters: her father, Henry Westall, for example, was the model for both Uncle Bascom in OF TIME AND THE RIVER, and Bascom Hawke, whose portrait Wolfe so memorably painted. The volume is somewhat worn -- about very good -- with a horizontal tear a half-inch below the head of the spine extending about haflway across, and some loss to the gilding on the spine. In a fine facsimile dustwrapper and accompanied by an inscribed copy of Gould's memoir. Both volumes bear the bookplates of the historian Francis Russell, whose affectionate review of Gould's book was published in the Winter 1977 of MODERN AGE. Signed by Author. Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929. Book Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Spine lettering worn but readable, a very good copy in worn, good only first issue dustwrapper (with the Wolfe portrait on the rear panel) lacking the bottom couple inches of the spine, with several other modest chips and tears, and several internal tape repairs. This copy is Inscribed by the author: "To Fidelia E. Stark with warmest thanks. Thomas Wolfe Oct 30, 1929." Also laid in is a four-page carbon manuscript (folded, small breaks at the folds, else near fine), unsigned, but almost certainly by Maxwell Perkins, dated April 17, 1929 entitled "Selling Points: Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe." The "Selling Points," in the third person, recounts the editorial process in detail, and enumerates the literary wonderment of the book. A modern classic, the author's first book, and generally considered his major achievement, a breathtaking autobiographical novel. An inscribed copy, with an intriguing manuscript account of the birth of the novel. Bookseller Inventory # 67103
