About this Item: London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-55, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Three volumes. Folding map in each volume. Return of the King is second state with sig. 4 and slipped type on p. 49 (this was formerly Hammond’s first state, but the bibliographer has revised his opinion). Original red cloth and printed dust jackets. Bookplate. Fine in very good fine dust jackets with slight wear, minor stains, tanning to the spines. An attractive set. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS. This is a very attractive set of the celebrated Lord of the Rings trilogy. The size of the edition was small: The Fellowship of the Ring (3000 copies), The Two Towers (3250 copies), and The Return of the King (7000 copies). Tolkien worked on this epic, not so much a trilogy as a long novel, from the publication of The Hobbit (1937) until the early 1950s. Beginning with the appearance of the second edition of 1966 and the nearly simultaneous appearance of the paperback edition in America, The Lord of the Rings became one of the best-selling works of fiction of the century. This is the “paradigmatic work of modern heroic fantasy. . . . Its success was not immediate, but its publication in paperback was an event sufficiently momentous to transform completely the market situation of heroic fantasy, and hence bring about a new era in its history. The Lord of the Rings made fantasy a significant publishing category and inspired a deluge of new works. The astonishing reception and influence of this work qualify it as one of the most remarkable literary phenomena of the 20th century” (Barron, ed., Fantasy Literature). The red cloth covered boards are clean and bright, with a bit of tarnishing to the gilt to The Two Towers. The Fellowship and The Return are clear and bright, but the corners of the front boards of The Fellowship are bumped. The text block is clean, bright and tight, without any internal foxing or markings. No spine lean, no previous owner's names or writing. The maps in The Fellowship and The Two Towers are the original, both without any tears or extra folds, also have the 1st state point with the red dot off coast of Umbar. The Return of The Kings map is also original and has no tears or extra folds. A beautiful, fresh collectable set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. About this Item: George Allen and Unwin, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A lovely set, above average condition. Uniform wear to the dust jackets and books, but we can't be sure they were purchased the same time. Impressions 1, 2, 1 of the three books (in title order). 1954, 1955, 1955. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear. All three jackets are similar condition, unrestored condtion, fading to spine titles and overall color, slight tattering and paper loss to spine ends, especially RotK lower spine which has a 1/4 inch paper loss. FotR has small; faded pinkish stain to front cover, closed 2 inch tear to seam, arrested with removal archival tape so it doesn't tear further. Slight lean to all three books, though bindings tight. No damp, stains or foxing. Spine gilt is still bright. As with us, you might be thinking all you need is to find a 1st/1st TT to make a first edition set worth much more than our asking price. This is true! We hope you find it before we do. Please ask for additional photos as this will show the condition better than a description. Seller Inventory # 001365
