Item Description: London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd, 1954-1955, 1955. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Each volume housed in a custom red cloth solander box with maroon labels to spines. Contemporary Foyle's ticket to front pastedown of vol. I. Spine-ends very lightly bumped, corners faintly rubbed, top edge of Fellowship slightly splashed and that of Two Towers negligibly so. An excellent set, internally fine and the maps especially clean, in the dust jackets with ring-and-eye motifs bright and fresh, a little rubbing and a few nicks at spine-ends, and otherwise vols. I and II each with one short nick along the top edges. Folding map at the end of each volume. First editions, first impressions, the Return of the King in first state with unbroken type and no signature mark (previously identified by Hammond as the second state), in the second state dust jacket with reviews added to the rear panel. This is one of a possible 3,000 sets in first impression throughout, though in practice this is a work that was often read to pieces, with the dust jackets a particularly rare survival. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having had a transformative impact upon the entertainment industry from electronic games to cinema. Item Description: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 1954,1954,1955, London, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo. A most attractive set of Tolkien's three Landmark Books: (1) The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 2,500 first impression/first state copies bound by Jarrold and Sons, very Nearly Fine condition in alike dust-wrapper; (2) The Two Towers, 3,250 first impressions, faded top-stain, light foxing of page edges, in about Fine dust-wrapper; (3) The Return of the King, one of 7,000 first edition/first printings, Near Fine with light foxing to page edges in about Fine, second state dustjacket with reviewer comments to first two titles on back-flap, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page 49 and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11]. All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto, back free endpaper with minor professional paper restoration. Dust-wrappers with original prices, free of prior owner inscriptions or markings. Rather scarce in this condition; Tolkien began The Lord of the Rings between 16 and 19 December 1937, three months after The Hobbit was published and George Allen & Unwin were encouraging Tolkien, against his inclination, to write a sequel. The rest is history. As C. S. Lewis commented (from the dust-jacket) : "If Ariosto rivalled it in invention (in fact he does not) he would still lack its heroic seriousness. No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner laws; none so seemingly objective, so disinfected from the taint of the author's merely individual psychology, no so relevant to the actual human situation yet so free from allegory. And what fine shading there is in the variations of style to meet the almost endless diversity of scenes and characters - comic, homely, epic, monstrous, or diabolic.". Bookseller Inventory # 12777

Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1963. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1963. The true 1st Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". The Fellowship of the Ring is signed by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien, to the title page. A wonderful provenance on this signature, as it comes with a note signed by Merlin Unwin, the son of Rayner Unwin. It states that The Fellowship, "belonged to my father Rayner Unwin (Tolkien's editor and publisher) and was kept in his personal library at our family home in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. After his death in 2000 it remained there until the death of his widow, Carol, in 2012. Merlin Unwin". The young lad whose book report was instrumental in the publishing of the Hobbit, kept this signed copy for many years. Has the initials A.R.R. to the back of the free endpaper. It has been added to this partial set, which had the original slipcase and the other two books, to complete this lovely set. I know of only one other signed set of this Deluxe Edition, which was given to Pauline Baynes, and recently sold for an extremely high price at auction. This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, and the original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing and marks to the covers, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, Initials to the back free endpaper, with no other writing or inscriptions in any of the books, except for the authors signature. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The original maps are all present, and have no tears or misfolds, nor any browning to the folds as often happens. The spine of the Two Towers is only slightly lighter in color, less so than the common flaw with this edition. Seems to only occur with the Two Towers, and rarely the other two books. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has some minor splits starting to the entry corners, but very little rubbing to the back corners, and no bumped corners as is often found. Clean and bright, one of the nicest I've run across in many years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues, with the signed copy added, makes a marvelous set for the Tolkien enthusiast. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, one small scuff to the back side edge, but whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce signed set with it's original Pauline Baynes illustrated slipcase. A full leather clamshell case has been crafted to house this wonderful set, including the original slipcase. The clamshell features full black leather with recessed panels, holding reproductions of Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. A beautiful presentation to house and protect this extraordinary set. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued. Bookseller Inventory # 1228

Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1954. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, 1st UK Edition, 1st Impressions with Original Dustjackets, Leather Slipcase. George Allen & Unwin, published in 1954, 1954, and 1955, the 1st UK Edition, 1st impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st impression published July 29th, 1954. One of 3000 printed for the UK. The Two Towers is a 1st impression published November 11th, 1954. One of 3250 printed for the UK. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955, one of 7000 printed for the UK. This copy is the later state, with the signature mark '4' and having the 'slipped' type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, which is the same as this copy, but now this is considered the later state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears noted, but the Fellowship shows some misfolds. Both the Fellowship and The Two Towers have the 1st state point map with the red dot off the coast of Umbar. The books show some only the lightest bit of soiling with the boards showing clean and bright. Gilt titles, author and publisher are still bright though slightly tarnished, some light rubbing to the edges, one bumped corner to the Return of the King. A little rubbing and shelfwear to the bottom of the boards, with the spine tips a little pushed and rubbed as well. All three books are in their original dustjackets, which are not price-clipped. The dustjackets are all moderately soiled, with some tanning and fading to the red lettering on the spines. The red topstain is clean and unfaded on The Fellowship and The Return, while the Two Towers shows some fading. Previous owners name to the front free endpaper of The Fellowship and The Two Towers, no other writing in any of the books. The endpapers show a moderate amount of offsetting on the The Fellowship and Return of the King, with no offsetting to the Two Towers. No foxing noted in any of the books. The dustjackets are not price clipped, and they show some minor loss to the edges, mostly to the flap folds and spine tips. They have a number of small closed tears to the edges, the largest to the top of the spine area on the Two Towers, effecting the 'J.R.' of the authors name. No repairs or restoration to these original dustjackets, completely unsophisticated. The text blocks are all clean and bright, without any internal foxing or markings. A highly sought after set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good. Finely bound in red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. A fine set. Each volume has a map illustrated by the author. First editions, first impressions, the Lord of the Rings in first state with signature mark "4" present on p. 49. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having a transforming impact upon the entertainment industry, from electronic games to movies. Item Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1955. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A lovely 1955 year set, above average condition. Includes a later 1957 box but not sold at the time. Impressions 4,2,1 of the three books. 1955, 1955, 1955,the wear and aging is fairly uniform, with small owners name stamp to all three books ffep. Loved and cherished by one owner. This is the likely first true set of the three books you could buy at one time and place. It was never possible to purchase a first edition set i.e. the 1st impression of each book, in a shop. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear. All three jackets are similar condition, fading to spine and overall color, slight tattering and paper loss to spine ends, RotK jacket has a 1 inch section missing from the lower spine. TT has a 3rd impression jacket. Jacket impressions were interchanged often at A & U. Slight lean to all three books, though bindings tight. Please ask for additional photos as this will show the condition better than a description. The box is worse for wear. Bookseller Inventory # 002024
