About this Item: London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd, 1954-1955, 1955. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Each volume housed in a custom red cloth solander box with maroon labels to spines. Contemporary Foyle's ticket to front pastedown of vol. I. Spine-ends very lightly bumped, corners faintly rubbed, top edge of Fellowship slightly splashed and that of Two Towers negligibly so. An excellent set, internally fine and the maps especially clean, in the dust jackets with ring-and-eye motifs bright and fresh, a little rubbing and a few nicks at spine-ends, and otherwise vols. I and II each with one short nick along the top edges. Folding map at the end of each volume. First editions, first impressions, the Return of the King in first state with unbroken type and no signature mark (previously identified by Hammond as the second state), in the second state dust jacket with reviews added to the rear panel. This is one of a possible 3,000 sets in first impression throughout, though in practice this is a work that was often read to pieces, with the dust jackets a particularly rare survival. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having had a transformative impact upon the entertainment industry from electronic games to cinema. About this Item: London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-55, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Three volumes. Folding map in each volume. Return of the King is second state with sig. 4 and slipped type on p. 49 (this was formerly Hammond’s first state, but the bibliographer has revised his opinion). Original red cloth and printed dust jackets. Bookplate. Fine in very good fine dust jackets with slight wear, minor stains, tanning to the spines. An attractive set. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS. This is a very attractive set of the celebrated Lord of the Rings trilogy. The size of the edition was small: The Fellowship of the Ring (3000 copies), The Two Towers (3250 copies), and The Return of the King (7000 copies). Tolkien worked on this epic, not so much a trilogy as a long novel, from the publication of The Hobbit (1937) until the early 1950s. Beginning with the appearance of the second edition of 1966 and the nearly simultaneous appearance of the paperback edition in America, The Lord of the Rings became one of the best-selling works of fiction of the century. This is the “paradigmatic work of modern heroic fantasy. . . . Its success was not immediate, but its publication in paperback was an event sufficiently momentous to transform completely the market situation of heroic fantasy, and hence bring about a new era in its history. The Lord of the Rings made fantasy a significant publishing category and inspired a deluge of new works. The astonishing reception and influence of this work qualify it as one of the most remarkable literary phenomena of the 20th century” (Barron, ed., Fantasy Literature). About this Item: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 1954,1954,1955, London, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition; First Printing. A most attractive set of Tolkien's three Landmark Books: (1) The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 2,500 first impression/first state copies bound by Jarrold and Sons, very Nearly Fine condition in alike dust-wrapper; (2) The Two Towers, 3,250 first impressions, faded top-stain, light foxing of page edges, in about Fine dust-wrapper; (3) The Return of the King, one of 7,000 first edition/first printings, Near Fine with light foxing to page edges in about Fine, second state dustjacket with reviewer comments to first two titles on back-flap, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page 49 and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11]. All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto, back free endpaper with minor professional paper restoration. Dust-wrappers with original prices, free of prior owner inscriptions or markings. Rather scarce in this condition; Tolkien began The Lord of the Rings between 16 and 19 December 1937, three months after The Hobbit was published and George Allen & Unwin were encouraging Tolkien, against his inclination, to write a sequel. The rest is history. As C. S. Lewis commented (from the dust-jacket) : "If Ariosto rivalled it in invention (in fact he does not) he would still lack its heroic seriousness. No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner laws; none so seemingly objective, so disinfected from the taint of the author's merely individual psychology, no so relevant to the actual human situation yet so free from allegory. And what fine shading there is in the variations of style to meet the almost endless diversity of scenes and characters - comic, homely, epic, monstrous, or diabolic.". Seller Inventory # 12777

About this Item: Ballentine Books, 1965. No Binding. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Barbara Remington (illustrator). First Edition. Not since we supplied most of the important pieces to a Tolkien museum in Switzerland has such a key piece come on the market. The importance of this now iconic artwork to Tolkien’s huge popularity should not be underestimated. It was the cult status Tolkien first achieved in America on sale of millions of paperback and not in his own Britain, that would make him a household name. The Hobbit for example was not produced in the UK until 1961, 24 years after the first publication. Until 1966 his books only sold a few thousand copies a year, hardly a best seller. In fact the Tolkien society fan club first started in America, some five years before the UK version. Keep reading if you want to know more. We are pleased to offer for sale, perhaps the most important original Tolkien related art piece. It is truly deserving as a museum piece representing a key turning point in the history of Professor Tolkien popularity. While Tolkien’s own art was used in the Hobbits, none of his was used in the first lotR except the dust jackets. This is the original concept art submitted to Mrs Betty Ballantine for the 1965 Ballantine Books first paperbacks of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books in America. It was also used for the promotional posters and banners for what was to become very popular editions. It was produced by artist Barbara Remington as a concept proof before the final colour versions were produced. The medium is gouache on card, glued on illustration board with the original Ballantine stock sticker on the reverse, art piece 11 x 11 inches in size plus frame and matt width. It comes with a personal COA letter from Betty Ballantine. It also comes with two custom made frames, one for the art and one for the letter. Art frame has plexiglass panel on the reverse so you can see the Ballantine stock sticker. It also includes a poster- Come to Middle-earth which is the same artwork in colour as well as used on the cover of Fellowship of the Ring. This iconic illustration also has a slightly infamous reputation as Tolkien did not like it initially, but this does not alter its importance to Tolkien lore as we know it today. The History In 1965 Ace Paperbacks in America released unauthorised editions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first time in paperback. This was due to a loophole in US copyright. The rush was then on for Houghton Mifflin, Tolkien’s US publisher in collaboration with Ballantine books to release authorised paperbacks of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. To close he copyright loophole, a new version of the LotR text was needed, in which Professor Tolkien set out to make changes in 1965. As was often the case, these revisions were quite delayed, forcing Ballantine Books to rush out a new edition of the Hobbit and using Barbara Remington artwork before she had actually read the books. Thus some of the strange figures in the artwork are not in the book. There was even a lion on the cover of the Hobbit PB until it was airbrushed out. During an interview with N Marion Hage and Andwerve, Barbarasaid- "I worked for Ballantine, and as a practice, always read the books before doing the artwork. I didn’t have this luxury with the Tolkien Books, something I wish I could have changed. Ballantine was in a hurry to get these books out right away. When they commissioned me to do the artwork, I didn’t have the chance to see either book, though I tried to get a copy through my friends. So I didn’t know what they were about. I tried finding people that had read them, but the books were not readily available in the states, and so I had sketchy information at best." (As noted above, Barbara did make sketches relative to the books, afterwards, but she couldn’t get the publishers to see the point, something which is very regretful). Professor Tolkien was not impressed with the new Hobbit book cover. In a letter to Rayner Unwin, 12 September 1965, Tolkien wrote: ‘I wrote expressing(with moderation) my dislike of the cover for. About this Item: London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954–5, 1954. 3 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, black morocco labels, gilt rule to bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. An excellent set. Each volume has a map illustrated by the author. First editions, first impressions. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having a transforming impact upon the entertainment industry, from electronic games to movies. About this Item: George Allen and Unwin (1955-56), 1955. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. J.R.R. Tolkien (1956, 1956, 1955) ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. A UK first edition set (‘The Return of the King first printing; ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and ‘The Two Towers’ fourth printings), published by George Allen and Unwin. The set consist of: The Fellowship of the Rings (4th printing, 1956, in a third printing dust jacket) The Two Towers (4th printing, 1956, in a third printing dust jacket) The Return of the King (1st printing, 1955, in a first printing dust jacket; first state (or variant) with no ‘4’ at the bottom of page 49, one of 7,000 copies printed). 7,000 copies were printed of ‘The Return of the King’ in its first print run. There are several states or variants with a ‘4’ or without a ‘4’ on page 49. It is now commonly accepted that the variant or state without the ‘4’ is a true first printing, first state. Since the third and fourth print runs were published within a few months apart it is likely that the publisher used the excess third printing dust jackets for the fourth print run. However, third printings are more valuable than fourth printings, and better than fifth printings dust jackets were housing fourth printing books. Condition: near fine. All three books retain their original maps as called for. All three books retain the original red colour top stain. All boards are vibrant in colour and well preserved as pictured. Slight shelf wear, but nothing major. NO previous owners’ inscriptions, marks, stamps etc. of any kind. Internally absolutely clean. Slight foxing and ghost marks to ffeps and where the maps allowed the circulation of air. This is quite common as the paper of the dust jackets is quite thick allowing air to touch the front and rear free endpapers. None of the dust jackets is price clipped. A whiff of foxing to the edges of the wrappers. Tiny edge wear to wrappers, but no major chipping or tears as often seen. Slight toning to the spines, but not as extensive as seen on other specimen. Overall, a very well-reserved and beautiful set. LotR, the landmark book that has popularised the fantasy genre. Famously adapted by Peter Jackson in New Zealand. A new TV adaptation will certainly push the book’s popularity once more. First and Fine. Seller Inventory # ABE-1529826277630
