Paperback. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: N/A. The unauthorized Ace paperback editions of LotR. Published without Tolkien's blessing, these Ace editions were soon afterwards discontinued, making them exceedingly rare and a collector's must. Includes The Fellowship of the Ring (A-4), The Two Towers (A-5), and The Return of the King (A-6). All interior pages are clean and unmarked aside from one previous owner's stamp inside the front cover of book one and minor foxing to prelims of book two. The covers are still vibrant, but these books have seen some wear. Heavy edge wear and chipping to book one, with two small repairs previously done with clear tape. Faint musty odor to book two, but no signs of any mold or mildew. Book three's binding is starting to split in a few places, but all pages remain firmly attached. All page edges have some faint staining and all spines have multiple reading creases.

Paperback. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: N/A. Published without Tolkien's blessing, these unauthorized Ace editions were soon afterwards discontinued, making them exceedingly rare. Includes The Fellowship of the Ring (A-4), The Two Towers (A-5), and The Return of the King (A-6).? Ace tried to be cheeky and capitalize on what they thought was a big enough loop-hole and publish the breakout series themselves, without paying Tolkien royalties for doing so. which as you can imagine, didn?t exactly go as planned. They pulled their editions from the market quickly, making these incredibly difficult to come by. Since these were the first widely available copies of the trilogy, they?re generally all in rough shape from being heavily read, making the nicer ones even more desirable.? All interior pages are clean and unmarked aside from the number "4" written in green marker on first free paper of book three. Covers still vibrant and crisp with light reading creases and edge wear. Small area of sticker scuffing on top left corner of book one's cover and a roman numeral "III" written in sharpie on top right corner of book three's cover. All page edges have some faint staining and all spines have light reading wrinkles and scuffing at spine ends, but no cracks. Overall, a sharp set.

Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Collectable, good. Three volume set, mass market paperbacks, illegal 1965 Ace Books edition, Ace-4, 5, and 6; red, yellow, and blue covers, each in apparently original clear mylar sleeve, all in like new red custom light-weight cardboard slipcase. Condition is rated only "good" because "Fellowship" mylar sleeve has, over the years, adhered to the spine and an inch of the rear cover along the spine; otherwise set is in Very Good condition. OVERALL: covers and page edges have very slight wear, pages a little tanned due to age, bindings are sound but due to age the binding glue may be weak so books should be opened gently; no marks or writing; mylar sleeves show no wear. FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: mylar sleeve has adhered to cover as already mentioned; this is not visible but prevents the sleeve from being removed; sleeve has also caused a tanned stripe on the inside of the front cover along the edge of the sleeve. TWO TOWERS: mylar sleeve has caused tanning on both covers along spine and tan stripe inside front cover as on "Fellowship"; 5/8 inch coffee spot on outer edge of first 3 pages. RETURN OF THE KING: hinges slightly creased; very slight rubbing on edges; upper third of front cover noticeably darkened as if had been in sunlight for extended time. OVERSIZE. **We provide professional service and individual attention to your order, daily shipments, and sturdy packaging. FREE TRACKING ON ALL SHIPMENTS WITHIN USA.

Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. Jack Gaughan (illustrator). First Thus. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. The infamous Ace Books "pirated edition" from 1965. The opening salvo of the "War over Middle- Earth". A lovely Very Good Plus matched set of this notorious edition. This is the only paperback 'Lord of the Rings' to be printed based on later printings of the 1st Edition. All others were based on the revised editions. Houghton Mifflin, seemed to have been in technical violation of the law by having imported too many copies printed by Allen & Unwin. Ace Books took notice of the sales and overseas production of the books, (which are marked, 'Printed in Great Britain'), determined that LotR's had fallen into the public domain in the United States, and launched their own edition in spring 1965. {Hammond and Anderson, pg 104} So to secure their American copyright, Tolkien was asked to submit new material to create a new Edition, and so secure their copyright beyond question. Tolkien conducted a personal campaign against Ace Books in letters to his American fans. The "War over Middle-earth' was fought in the popular press, with the publicity contributing to increased sales and popularity. Within a year, Ace gave in to public pressure. They agreed to print no more copies, and they negotiated royalties to be paid to Tolkien. This set of books is Near Fine, almost no wear to the edges or covers. Also much less tanning to the pages than the norm, from the highly acidic paper, and almost no creasing to the spines. Only minor amount of rubbing to the exterior, with the covers very bright and clean. No previous owners names in any of the books, no other marks or writing noted. A custom red leather slipcase featuring Tolkien's Ring and Eye device, with Tengwar Title & Author on one side, and his JRRT monogram gilt stamped on the back. Makes a beautiful presentation of these exceptional books. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / No Jacket, as Issued.
