All three volumes are in Near Fine condition with the top edge stained red, clean and bright textblock, with no marks or writing. Original maps are in still in place, no folds or tears noted. The dj's show beautifully without any chips or loss, vol's 1 & 3 show a slight darking to the spines. None of the dustjackets are price clipped, and it still shows the full price and publishers info. Three volumes complete - 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 1954, 423pp, [1]; 'The Two Towers', 1954, 352pp and 'The Return of the King', 1955, 416pp. Rebound in full morocco, raised bands, spines in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, author label to fourth, date to foot in gilt, covers bordered with single gilt fillet, upper covers with central ring and eye device in gilt, a.e.g., new endpapers. Externally very good indeed. Internally bright and clean, except for a small patch of colour bleed from the original cloth onto the bottom margin of the final page of the 'Return of the King', with an associated small hole to bottom margin. Each volume with a folding map tipped on to rear endpaper. With a tipped in, slightly smudged, signature of Tolkien's to front pastedown of volume one. First edition set, but later state, Hammond and Anderson initially had this as the first state (page 86), but apparently have revised this opinion since. You can follow how the movies were first visualized by Lee, and carried thru by Peter Jackson, with Lee's assistance throughout the movie's production. A scarce book, again one of only 200 produced. The cloth of the book is clean and unmarked, with no wear to the edges, and the leather is unmarked, clean and bright. The Tolkien monogram is clean and bright on both book and slipcase. A minor area on the backside of the slipcase, showing some soiling, and minor marks from a cleaning attempt. The slipcase shows some minor wear to the edges, with a few frayed edges on the base and top of the case. The text block and all illustrations are clean and bright, no signatures or writing whatsoever. A beautiful, highly collectable Signed Limited Numbered Edition for the Tolkien collector.
